With the rapid development of web-based learning, research on Collaborative KnowledgeBuilding(CKB) has been focused. Conventional CKB systems have some drawbacks onknowledge storage and knowledge representation. Meanwhile, wiki, an emerging socialnetworking service software, has an outstanding ability of knowledge management, andknowledge visualization, another emerging technology, knowledge visualization, is an excellenttool to display knowledge structure. But neither wiki nor knowledge visualization could be wellused in educational environment unless it is used under the guidance of pedagogy andeducational psychology. Hence research on wiki supported visualized knowledge buildingsystem has significant meaning.Goals of this study are to design an wiki supported visualized knowledge buildingenvironment and construct it as a CKB system and to verify it. Based on research of CKBsystem design principles, theory foundation of knowledge building and methods of choosingwiki and knowledge visualization technology, we proposed an instructional system design modelof wiki supported visualized CKB system. This model is different from other CKB system modelin the following aspects. Firstly, it is intended to be applied in declarative knowledge building.Secondly, it is intended to enhance the CKB’s capacity of knowledge management andknowledge representation. In the guidance to this system design model, we design and develop awiki supported visualized CKB system. In order to verify this model, we design and conduct anempirical experiment, and results show that this model is feasible and effective.
