Education is to cultivate people’s service activities, the function of adult education is deep in and after the culture of human service activities, therefore it as" reality" has been for people to know, but as " the future" has been not for people to conscious. Adult education as an important part in the lifelong education, is not only an important way in human resources development, but also is the important part of the development of higher education in the era of knowledge and economy. Shouldering the important responsibility of adult socialization, and is closely related to the development of the whole society, its function is developing as the development of modern society concept. Analysis from the function object, adult education’s social function contains individual continuing socialization and groups social adaptability. Analysis from the functional forms, adult education’s social function contains manifest and latent. Analysis from the results of function, adult education’s social function contains positive and negative. On the role of social content, education’s social function is to need the development of economic, political, cultural and social. Adult education also has the function of maintaining the social operation, adapting the social changes, constructing the social future. Although we all know the functions of adult education, but whether it is in China or abroad, they are paying attation to the education scale, education quality, education structure of the adult education, and ignore the optimization of adult education function and the harmonious development of multi function. From the perspective of sociology, analysis of the function of adult education is the theoretical basis that the adult education to develop faster and better.The basic functions of adult education are not always able to normal play, as a result of all sorts of reasons of the society, it will appear the pathological phenomenon such as "dysfunctional""weakening""dysfunction’ and so on. Sometimes there are some radical contradiction and conflict between the society and the schools, the teachers and students, most of these are associated with these disorders. Based on the analysis of the social function of adult education, it shows the adult education should continue to optimize and coordinate between each function at the same time. The optimization of adult education function includes adult education recessive function to the dominant function transformation and negative function to positive function transformation. The coordination of adult education function includes the coordination between individual function and social function, economic function, political function and culture function, maintain function, adaptive function and function of construction and so on. According to the theoretical analysis and China’s current situation of adult education, it proved that the adult education needs to reform. The optimization and coordination between the Individual function and the social function requires the adult education from the pursuit of education to the pursuit of knowledge, from academic compensation to study volunteers transformation. The optimization and coordination between economic, political and cultural function requires the adult education from the economic benefits to the brand benefit transformation. The optimization and coordination between maintain, adapt, and construction function requires the adult education from a single school to cooperative education transformation.
