Handheld technology, as a new tool of experiments, is easy-to-conduct, visual, real-time and accurateand so on. The integration of handheld technology and chemical experiment has greatly enriched the studyof chemical experiments and expanded the scope of the study of chemical experiments. Handheldtechnology brings new changes for chemical experiments in the information age. In recent years, it hasbeen widely applied in normal colleges and universities directly under the Ministry of Education. Besides,the primary and middle schools also use handheld technology in the science experiment teaching ineconomically developed areas. But, handheld technology is rarely used in both universities and primary andmiddle schools in Henan. Thus, the thesis explores the application of handheld technology to chemicalexperiment teaching for students of Henan normal university. The application of handheld technology inchemical experiment teaching not only makes it possible for normal college students to understand andmaster the advanced science and technology, but also raises their science inquisition abilities and theinnovative spirits. It will help them teach chemistry in the future. In this paper researches are conducted intwo aspects.(1) Development of chemical experiment. Two experimental teaching cases have been designed. Theyare “the development of school-based curriculum resources by handheld technology—research the waterquality of Wei He flowing through Xinxiang” and “explore the best conditions of extracting chlorophyllfrom spinach by handheld technology”. The former is school-based curriculum. It is designed bycombining handheld technology with educational resources in Xinxiang. The case can be used in practiceactivity curriculum in middle and elementary schools of Xinxiang. In addition, it can offer some referencefor similar research in other areas. The latter is multi-factor quantitative study. It is designed by excavatingand extending chemical experiment in chemical teaching material.(2) Teaching research in handheld technology experiment class. On the premise of theoretical basis andpractical guideline, handheld technology experiment class has been offered for normal college students ofchemistry major at the point of the integration of information technology and course. The study lasts for ayear and a half from September2010to April2012.The research is mainly divided into two stages: pre-preparation phase and teaching practice. The teaching content and proper experimental conditions arediscussed in pre-preparation phase. As a result, three serialized experiments ware included in chemistryexperiment teaching course. In March of2012,155students in the class of2009attended handheldtechnology experiment course in virtual lab of Henan normal university. The procession of teachingpractice was divided into three stages. According to different teaching objectives, we selected properlychemical experiments and used different teaching models which ware the explanation–practice–explanation,the cooperation-inquiry and the independent-inquiry teaching models. We tried to discuss the ways and themodels of implementing the handheld technology in experimental teaching for normal college students ofchemistry major. The practice research indicated that it was feasible to apply handheld technologyexperiment class for normal college students of chemistry major. Through the elective course, the studentshave mastered the advanced technology and its application in chemistry teaching. If conditions permit, theywill apply handheld technology in education in the future. Besides, the students can design new chemicalexperiments, by combining handheld technology with contents in chemical teaching material. Their scienceinquisition abilities ware also raised.After the course ended, present situation was investigated in secret form. The students minor inhandheld technology experiment class ware tested. The survey was conducted in two aspects.The first onewas “surveying the validity, feasibility of chemical teaching using handheld technology and students’agreement”. The results of the research tell that most of the students hold a positive attitude to handheldtechnology. Besides, they think it is difficult to use handheld technology in chemistry teaching because ofsome factors.The second one was “surveying the teaching effect of handheld technology experiment class”.The research results as follows: Most of the students think that the content of the course is close tochemistry teaching in middle school and moderately difficult. It is useful for teaching chemistry in middleschool in the future. Besides, most students think teaching models are suitable. The teaching effect isexcellent.The third-year students have certain knowledge foundation. They should understand the work principlein order to use and maintenance handheld technology more conveniently. In the teaching process,understanding the work principle is as important as mastering the method to use handheld technology forstudents. Before experiments, teacher should make good preparation and give students full guide. Besides, the stability and accuracy of handheld technology ware two important factors affecting the effect ofexperiment teaching. In order to heighten the effect of handheld technology experiment class, it isnecessary to clear the technical obstacles.
