Although the virtual laboratory is widely applied in teaching, there are lots of problems existing in the process of using, for example, learner’s lack of autonomy and virtual environments’ lack of openness; shortage of the essential human environment and the creation of context needed to be improved; it can not satisfy the individual differences of learners, the experiments are presented only in accordance with the syllabus, unified requirements and methods of instructional objectives lead to the lack of learners’ choice, web-based function of the virtual laboratory platform is still not perfect; the procedures of experiments operation are linearized which leads to the procedures can not be well recorded.In order to solve the aforementioned problems, this study firstly learns about the existing problems of the virtual laboratory’s design, application, chemical inquiry-based learning, the research status of the inquiry-based virtual laboratory and problems existing in the research by means of literature research. Based on the literature research, this study compares and analyses the existing virtual laboratory platform, interviews excellent chemistry teacher in high school, designs and hands out questionnaires, analyses and manipulates data, learns about the virtual laboratory’s strengths and weaknesses in the respect of design and application and problems existing in the process of teachers’ application of virtual laboratory. At the same time, the study also puts forward the suggestion and expectation towards inquiry-based virtual laboratory.Then the study sums up the nature of chemistry-based experiment of alkali meta and related compound, also proposes different experimental approaches for each experiment and sum up various phenomena appearing during the experiment according to the related descriptions of alkali metal in《Full-time ordinary high school chemistry syllabus》. Based on developmentbased research, this study designs and implements a set of inquiry-based virtual experiments including proposing questions and the creation of the question context, manipulation and evaluation of the inquiry-based virtual experiment according to inquiry-based learning theory and constructivism theory.Finally, the study implements the teaching based on inquiry-based chemistry virtual experiment, analyses the effect of the implementation and improves inquiry-based chemistry virtual experiment according to the results of the analysis.For the sake of the further improvement of inquiry-based chemistry virtual experiment and teaching scheme, the study makes explicit teaching implementation for inquiry-based chemistry virtual experiment by randomly extracting part of the middle schools.The study re-uses survey research by questionnaires, interviews, etc., to learn about more effects of inquiry-based virtual chemistry experiments’ implementation, find out problems in the system with the aim of further improvement during the subsequent research.
