China is undergoing a period of social transition, and in this process, many social problems arebecoming increasingly prominent, which requires a lot of professional social workers to useprofessional skills to solve the problems. Nevertheless, social workers in China are still in an imbalancebetween supply and demand, the reality is that demand is far greater than the supply. This paper selects several social work graduates as examples and adopts qualitative researchmethod to conduct interviews. This study hopes to explore the mental progress of their retention, and totruly show their state of mind in different periods in the university and at work by learning their mentalprocess when choosing the social work and working conditions after being employed. We expect thatthe society care about this group of professional social workers, pay attention to theirs needs and voices, and give them more understanding and recognition.Through the study, we have the following conclusions: a number of students in the social workmajor are reluctant to be enrolled in the field; social work values are very important for the intervieweesto select the social work and the social work education has played an important role in the valuesbuilding; Meanwhile, the practical training and internship opportunities offered by the school are alsoimportant for the students’ professional learning and whether they are engaged in the professional work;the difference between social work philosophy and government concept, the salary being not includedin the system or not consistent with the effort, as well as the low social identity of social work are thedifficulties the professional social workers encounter at work.In order to solve the problems, the paper attempts to make some suggestions from several anglesincluding the schools, social work agencies, government, society, professional social workers, andexpect that professional social workers can be provided a more favorable working environment.
