Before the appearance of formal vocational school, the apprenticeship (teaching by words and deeds) was the main channel to deliver the knowledge, technology and culture. Apprenticeship is widely deemed as the oldest form of vocational education with its amazing vitality. At the end18th century, as the rising of the Industrial Revolution, the apprenticeship was on the wane for the reason of the mechanized large-scale production, and the apprenticeship system was replaced by the vocational school education gradually. However, vocational school emphasized the theory and neglected the practice resulted in the school graduates far from the need of the industry. As stepping into the20th, the rapid progress of scientific technology and the intensification of the globalization led to the fierce competition of world economy, which also resulted in the change of the industrial structure and occupational structure. So, the society poses higher requests on the modern workers. Currently, modern apprenticeship has been chosen as a new vocational education strategy by many western developed countries. Meanwhile, the "work-study combination" of which is somewhat similar to the western modern apprenticeship system, is also taken as a key way for reforming the vocational education in China. In spite of the great achievements, the "work-study combination" is challenged by some typical problems currently, such as the low level of the " work-study combination" and the low commitment of the enterprises to the school-enterprise combination, no quality assurance to the deliver quality. According to relevant study, as a kind of ancient Chinese apprenticeship system, the skill apprenticeship system has longest history. Until the fifties and sixties of the20th, the technical schools had retained some fine tradition of apprenticeship system. But tradition of this kind distinguished, what are the differences between China and western countries? During the innovation of our vocational education, could we use such personnel training methods? For the curiosity to the revival of apprenticeship system in western countries and thinking to the plight of Chinese vocational education reform, this study chose the apprenticeship system as the topic. Given the similarities of the vocational education between China and Britain:not attaching importance to vocational and technical education; the path of development of vocational education between the two countries is very difficult; both striving to develop vocational education. As a result, in order to make study more specific, author views UK modern apprenticeship system and ancient Chinese skill apprenticeship system as specific object of study. After comparing and analyzing, author could sum up experience and lessons, which is good for Chinese modern apprenticeship construction.This thesis is divided into five chapters.ChapterⅠ:Introduction. Firstly, introducing background, including the reason of bringing about this topic, literature revies, relevant concepts and research methods.Chapter Ⅱ:The evolution and characteristics of ancient Chinese skill apprenticeship system. Firstly, it summarizes the development of the skill apprenticeship system. Then, analyzing and summarizing the characteristics of the apprenticeship system, characteristics of implementation and external environmental characteristics included.Chapter III:Implementation process and characteristics. of UK modern Apprenticeship system. Based on the analysis of introduction of UK modern Apprenticeship system, author summarizes its characteristics.ChapterⅣ:the comparison between ancient Chinese apprenticeship system and UK modern apprenticeship system. Firstly, author establishes the frame for the two apprenticeship. After, analyzing similarities and differences of their background, implementation process, regulatory agencies and funding mechanism, and so on. Chapter V:Revelation of the two apprenticeships to our modern apprenticeship system. According to the comparison before, author concludes some beneficial revelations:cultivating good external environment, establishing perfect internal development standards.
