Jiaojing College academy was founded by Wurongguang who is the governor of a province in the thirteenth year of Emperor Daoguang (1833) in Qing Dynasty. It instructed not only the classics and histories but also the classics in Han and Song Dynasty at the same time. It was different from the academies which specialized in imperial examinations and also unlike the Gujing Exquisite Hostel and the Xuehai Hall. In the twentieth year of Emperor Guangxu, Jiangbiao took the place of the principal. He kept the principles of statecraft ideology and learned the educational content and system from the Western. He reformed the academy by associating the school, newspaper and institute, this broken the traditional concept of academy. In the twenty-ninth year of Guangxu, the Jiaojing College academy was changed name as Chengde editors and translators’house. This history lasted70years.After the independent development, the system in Jiaojing College academy was gradually improved. The principal collected the best students from two examinations in one year. The numbers of students increased24to44. Wushumei took place of the principal after the failure of the Hunan New Deal and prepared increasing8subjects. The academy’s operation depended on the salt taxes from the Xiang River, but the fund was always in a shortage. There are well-stocked books in the academy and the management of these books ensured the best using of them. The success of the academy made several schools to imitate it.Jiaojing College academy not only set a good example for college reform in Hunan province during the late Qing Dynasty, but also pushed the development of Hunan New Deal moving forward. In politics, Jiaojing College advocated and publicized political reform by introducing western history and political system. In education, reform college institution and pouring western learning into it whose traditional education system, spring up and development of modern education reform in Hunan province. In economic part, Jiaojing college initiate industry, develop commerce; appeal to train western learning talent, and to push the development of modern industry in Hunan. In social part, advocated to change the general mood of society, advocated to abolish foot binding, which had improved social atmosphere to a certain extent in Hunan.In a word, Jiaojing College academy not only quested in the educational system but also broken the traditional concept of academy and established Xiangxue Newspaper and Shixue institute. It associated the school, newspaper and institute and improved the Hunan New Deal. This is the highlight why Jiaojing College academy was different from the traditional academy.
