With the development of the world economy, English which is regarded as the universal language has been the compulsory course in most of Chinese schools. With the development of English teaching a lot of scholars and experts find that motivation is one of the most important factors that would determine students’success or failure in English learning. Motivation is the psychological factor which would stimulate human beings to act. Every action of human beings ascribes to certain motivation. Students’learning motivation regarded as the internal power can drive students to learn. Students’learning motivation is complex. However, if the teacher know clearly students’ motivation, which can help the teacher to stimulate and cultivate students’learning motivation. This paper tends to have a research on middle school students’motivation in English learning, tries to find out the factors which influence students’motivation, and puts forward the strategies which can improve students’motivation, so as to offer suggestions for English learning and teaching.First, this paper will discuss the definition and classification of motivation, and the motivation-related theories. Then In order to get a better understanding of middle school students’motivation situation, the author has done a survey to200students and10teachers who come from LuXian No.1middle school, the results of which indicate that a large number of middle school students do not have high motivation in English learning. The author puts forward the strategies to stimulate and sustain students’motivation from the perspectives of confidence, attribution, interests, learning condition etc.. By means of enhancing and strengthening students’motivation, teachers can activate students’interests in English learning, improve their learning efficiency so as to achieve harmonious English learning and teaching.
