As the reform of teachers’ merit pay, research on performance appraisal of teachersis increasingly becoming necessary. Due to the particularity of compulsory education, thecomplexity of the nature of teachers’ work, research on performance appraisal of teachersof compulsory education schools has a unique meaning. Meanwhile performanceappraisal as a means to motivate teachers, concerned satisfaction of teachers isparticularly important. The article is to investigate the main problems in the currentperformance appraisal of compulsory education schools, analyze the causes and proposesolutions, which is based on teachers’ performance appraisal satisfaction as a startingpoint.This thesis is divided into five parts.The first part depicts the background,purpose,significance and method of this research, as well as the main definitions. Thesecond part focused on the literature review including teachers’ performance assessmentdeveloping, problems and solutions.Chapter three depicts the hypothesis, design, tools, object of this research, andhighlights the preparation process of the questionnaire of teachers’ satisfaction aboutperformance appraisal.Chapter four mainly analyzed the survey data by SPSS17.0statistic software.Surveyshows that satisfaction of teachers in compulsory schools is not high on the overall level,what dissatisfied mainly in the assessment process,assessment result and self-realizationthree aspects.Chapter five summed up issues in the performance appraisal of teachers incompulsory schools, which is based on the conclusion of empirical study.The issuesinclude:incomplete assessment content, stereotyped assessment program, low level ofparticipation of teachers in the process, unfair use of result of the assessment, someteachers become utilitarian and leaders value performance but slight management.Theseissues are attribute to difficult to draft a performance assessment program, conflictbetween concept of performance assessment and the professional responsibility of teachers, lack of capacity of performance assessment in compulsory education schools. Inthe end,author studied some strategies to solve the problems. The strategies include:draw up programs separately according to position, encourage teachers to participate,strengthen schools’ performance assessment capacity training, strengthen teachers’professional ethics education.I hope that this research can provide a reference tocompulsory education schools to better the teachers’ performance appraisal.
