With the constant expansion of graduate education in China, people pay muchattention on graduate training quality problems. It is particularly necessary to researchon the relationship between supervisors and postgraduates as the relationship betweensupervisors and postgraduates impacts education quality directly. Graduate educationis different from undergraduate education. It requires students to have more creativethinking, and cultivation of creative thinking needs supervisors’ effective guidance.However, some supervisors’ role is alienation because of the influence of variousfactors in the reality. Supervisors increasingly become managers and businessmen andthey have no time to take into account students. Because of interference by a varietyof internal and external factors, postgraduates are fuzzy in role understanding andunintentional to conduct academic research. Alienation of the role-playing leads theteacher-student relationship cold. What impacts teacher-student relationship and howto make both play their roles well to improve the relationship between supervisors andpostgraduates effectively need ponder. This paper uses a combination of theoreticaland empirical approach, using documents, surveys, comparison and other researchmethods, exploring teacher-student relationship in higher education systematic anddeeply.The first chapter is introduction, introducing the background of the selected topic,analyzing the significance of it, summarizing the current situation of the relationshipbetween supervisors and postgraduates based on the domestic and aboard research,defining the relevant concepts such as teacher-student relationship, postgraduates andpostgraduate tutors, choosing the methods of research, and finally proposing thestructure of this thesis.The second chapter describes the theoretical basis of the relationship betweensupervisors and postgraduates, describes the meaning of the role and the basic contentof the role theory, using role theory to invest the significance of the relationshipbetween supervisors and postgraduates.The third chapter is the current situation of the relationship between supervisorsand postgraduates, which investigates the current situation of the academy organismaccording to the questionnaire to postgraduates and supervisors and points out themain existing problems and discusses their causes. The fourth chapters explores the foreign successful experience of the relationshipbetween supervisors and postgraduates, discusses and analyzes characteristics of therelationship between supervisors and postgraduates of German, the United Kingdom,America and Japan, and summarizes their useful experience, then makes reference toChina.The fifth chapter discusses the optimization of the role theory of the relationshipbetween supervisors and postgraduates, and proposes optimization strategy of therelationship between supervisors and postgraduates to the problems.The results show that, A University has certain problems in the relationshipbetween supervisors and postgraduates which impacts the quality of graduates’training. In order to solve these problems, school should draw lessons from foreigncountries and analyze from the three perspectives of the supervisors, postgraduatesand the school.
