There is no doubt that preview before English class plays an important role inEnglish learning; however, it has not been well practiced so far. In fact, preview is theinitial stage of self-learning, and also it is the necessary step to develop students’independent self-learning ability. Previewing new lesson is one of the ways toimprove self-learning ability, which will benefit a lot to our classroom efficiency:because students will become active learners in acquiring knowledge when they solveproblems and search for answers all by themselves. Apparently, preparation is veryimportant. However, it has been found through investigation that most senior middleschool students haven’t formed a good habit of previewing new lessons; they play apassive role in their studies and rely too much on their teacher. Therefore the current“teach and learn” situation is the starting point of this study. Here the authorsummarizes the main issues of this study as follows:A) The goal and significance of this study–how to understand the significance ofpreviewing English lessons before classes;B) The empirical study–to investigate and analyse the current situation of highschool English preview further;C) Problem solving-how to preview an English lesson?Only by proceeding from reality, further study of high school students in Englishpreview status can we get objective data to analyse the problem better. In this study,we not only need to understand the aims and significance of preview English lessonsand some of the relevant theoretical basis like constructivism, but also study someEnglish preview status, including both sides of teachers and students, to identify thedrawbacks and shortcomings. In this research, the author used methods asquestionnaire and interview to collect data. More importantly, to explore how highschool students preview new lesson, to provide a set workable preview methods tohelp students update their way of preview, promote their ability to learn, finallydevelop students’ self-learning ability based on current study of high school Englishtextbooks and the New English Curriculum Standards.
