Since the1980s, Howard Gardner of Harvard University proposed a new theory named multiple intelligences, which triggered global concerns and researches of multiple intelligences theory. It is an application of multiple intelligences theory to promote the development of linguistic intelligence of students in the fine arts disciplines. This research, with the results of questionnaires, classroom observation and student language proficiency test data, and the method of percentage statistics, information classification and coding analysis, studied the current situation of linguistic intelligence of high grades students in a mid-level primary school of Nanjing. The results show that the language input of fine art teacher in the learning of fine arts needs to be improved, and the language communications between teachers and students and the speaking situations which are created by teachers for students in the classroom are quite few, meanwhile, most students in fine art learning do not want to speak, and they are not good at that. The requirement of curriculum standard is that students should use the language and writing to express their feeling, awareness and understanding of visual world such as natural beauty and works of art, but the gap between current situation and requirements is fairly big. Fine arts teachers should show a good demonstration of language and create situations to lead students to speak. Teachers should encourage students to read books and newspapers about arts, to write more essay about works of art in order to promote the development of linguistic intelligence of students in listening, speaking, reading and writing. This thesis proposes some recommendations in the end, wishing to promote the development of linguistic intelligence of students in fine art teaching of primary schools. This research suggests that the educational concept of fine art teacher has not reached the requirements of the curriculum standard in general. Particularly, the opinion that the fine arts disciplines cannot promote the development of linguistic intelligence of students is a narrow viewpoint. Therefore, the fine arts teachers should change the concept of education and teaching in the process of teaching fine arts, and understand the text books with creative ideas. Teachers can suitably transform fine arts’curriculum resource for effectively promoting the development of linguistic intelligence in the process of fine arts learning.
