Karl Jaspers is a famous existentialism philosopher and educator in Germany in the20thcentury. Martin Heidegger had called him “the founder of the German existentialism”.Hisuniversity education thoughts have had a profound impact on higher education. When peoplehave focused on his higher education thoughts, few people have concerned about hiscontributions in the aspect of university teacher. Karl Jaspers’ university teacher thoughts hadhis own original ideas. He formulated a new idea on the functions of university teacher,reshaped the image of university teacher and improved the quality and ability of universityteacher, aiming to realize the ideals and tasks of university. These thoughts have become theshining points in Karl Jaspers’teacher thoughts.This paper is divided into five parts.The section of introduction mainly describes the reason why to choose this topic, thesignificance of this study and research status at home and abroad, then it lists the researchmethods used in this article and makes a core concept of the definition and description.Chapter1mainly focuses on the life of Karl Jaspers, historical background and hismasterpiece What is Education.This chapter selects the experiences which have a significanteffect on his teacher thoughts from Jaspers’childhood, study time and practical activity ofeducation, then which are combed and analyzed.Chapter2discusses on Jaspers’ theoretical foundations of university teacher thoughts.This chapter describes the general ideas of existentialism philosophy andJaspers’communication philosophy, then analyzes the application of two kinds of philosophythoughts in education field, which provides theoretical foundations for his teacher thoughts.Chapter3gives a description of main contents of Jaspers’university teacherthoughts.This chapter expounds detailedly systematically Jaspers’university teacher thoughtsfrom teacher’s role, quality, image and the internal factors of promoting teacher growth.Chapter4concerns about the enlightenments of university teacher professionaldevelopment in China according to Jaspers’ university teacher concept, such as: constructionof good teacher-student relationship, advocation of communicative education, insistence on people-oriented approach, establishment of the atmosphere of academic freedom, creation ofgood environment for teacher’s healthy development. These inspirations have an activereference value and instructional function of university teacher professional development inChina.
