With the tide of education reform and the coming of knowledge economy time, thewhole society puts forward higher requirements for the raise of talents. In order to adaptto the demand of social development further, and better face the challenge of the newworld, as sports education base of cultivating talents, sports colleges and universitiesmust timely change education thoughts, update education idea, and actively explore,research new teaching method to adapt the education concept, so as to ensure theadaptability, scientificity and creativity of teaching.Discovery teaching method is a teaching methodology proposed by Bruner, afamous American cognitive education psychologist. This methodology is based onmethodology advocating children’s personal experience mentioned by Rousseau andFroebel, and the scientific idea of "people can find laws of nature depending onobservation and ration" advocated by scientists such as Bacon, Newton and so on.Bruner claims that the purpose of learning lies in discovering the way of learning andtransfering discipline basic structure into cognitive structure in students’ mind.The paper used logic analysis, mathematical statistics, comparative experimentmethod, case study, expert interview, questionnaire, literature research methods and soon. The paper aims to understand theoretical basis, implementation principle, teachingprocess of discovery teaching method, students’ original knowledge structure, andanalyze in depth the objective law of badminton sport, requirements for human body,and requirements for teachers. Thus the paper demonstrates the feasibility and majorteaching advantages of discovery teaching method in PE major badminton education.For case study,2badminton classes in grade2010, Soochow university are takenas experimental object. By teaching experiment, the results show that compared withtraditional teaching method, discovery teaching method has more advantage in improving the students’ theoretical knowledge level, technical skills and ability to findproblems and solve them. Besides, it can improve students’ teaching ability andstudents’ creative thinking ability.Therefore, discoery teaching method is not only applicable to badminton educationin PE major, and also propose necessary reference for teaching reform of other sportsitems.
