As the programmatic document and policy paper of basic education reform,which is issued by the Ministry of Education,<the outline of basic educationreform (trial)> puts emphasis on students’ active engagement in learning. Underthe guidance of the curriculum reform spirit, cultivation of students’ activenessand engagement is under the highlight of the teaching staff. But because of thespecific characteristic of courses and the complexity of individual student ofdifferent ages, the extent of students’ engagement in the English class is totallydifferent. Based on the English class, this study selected some students fromsome middle schools in Dalian as the object of the research, through the methodof document analysis, questionnaires and interview, to identify problems and todiscuss the countermeasure of enhancing the extent of students’ engagement inEnglish class for students’ great learning efficiency and high quality of Englishclass teaching. This study is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the reasonsand the background of this study, and the analysis of the results of research athome and aboard to find out the starting point, to find out the goal andsignificance of the study. On the basis of analysis of some conception such asstudent engagement, the basic concept of student engagement, research methodand process are confirmed.The second part aims to the investigation of the current situation and theinvestigation contents include: the recognition and the attitude to studentsengagement in English class and the current situation of the studentsengagement in English class. And aims to summarize the problems, theinfluencing factors and the suggestions of student engagement in English classin junior middle school. The survey result suggests that: the engagement extentof students from junior middle school is a bit satisfied; at the same time, thereexists more questions that that should be solved, such as the shortage of innermotivation, the lower efficiency of students’ engagement, the absence of questioning and enquires, the formalization of students’ reflection on learningEnglish.In view of the survey result and the existing problem, the third part putforward four suggestion as following: cultivate students’ motivation of learningEnglish for students’ active engagement in English class; establish theharmonious relationship of teacher-student for students’ delighted engagementin English class; cultivate the learning strategy for students’ ability ofengagement in English class; optimize the teaching process for students’experience of engagement in English class.
