Teacher’s professional development has become a hot topic in the field of modern education. Researches on the present situation of the primary school art teachers’ development are, however, not enough. Based on many theses and in the guide of practitioners and theorists of related fields, a questionnaire was authorized on the state quo of the primary school art teachers’ professional development. Representative primary school art teachers were chosen as respondents, which makes this investigation credible and effectual.This research includes the present situation of structure development level, participation degree in professional activities and needs in the professional development among primary school’s art teachers in Nanjing. Results show that current professional structure development level of primary school’s art teachers in Nanjing is far better than average.Level of reflection, standard of professional training, extent of participation in diverse education subjects, all these are connected with teachers’professional promotion degree. Teachers have plenty of opportunities to attend to various professional development activities, which make faculties and experts in this discipline the main group that can easily influence teachers. Better professional structural development calls for more than what is concluded in this questionnaire. Training in capacity of art teaching is the most urgent demand while need in artistic accomplishment is the least. There are various development needs among different art teachers. Meanwhile, teachers have a partiality for those promotional activities with flexible schedules and closely linked with practice. According to investigation and analyses in teachers’ professional development status, we know that educational administrative departments and art teachers themselves play prominent roles in the maturation of the whole vocation.Take present development condition of art teachers" professional capacity in primary schools in Nanjing into account, we table proposals comprising administrative and individual feasibility. Educational department need to attach importance to professional promotion of art teachers in primary school, considering the demands of teachers from different fields. Besides, quality of professional development activities weighs more than quantity. As for art teachers themselves, they’d better pay more attention to their theoretical attainment, choose suitable ways based on their own situation and make the best of Community of Practice to promote their professional capacity.
