In the English learning process, it is not difficult for the learners to discover that theability to "listen” is very important in these basic skills: listening, speaking, reading andwriting, but it also has plagued most English learners, which is a very prominent problem.Listening that is the basic skill to develop other language skills, is also a key factor to measureEnglish learner’s language ability. It is necessary to strengthen students’ listeningcomprehension, which will help them to gain a comprehensive application ability of language,so it has been English teachers’ consensus to improve listening skills in English teaching ofsenior high school. For a long term, listening has been the weakness of teaching. Foreign language teachingin China determines the lacking of real language environment. Student’s blind speculationgreatly affects their examination results, so the listening test always takes anxiety and tensionto them, which causes to lose confidence for them. To review previous even nowadayslistening teaching activities, it is mainly the case that the teacher indoctrinates actively, andstudents accept listening materials input passively. Traditional teaching method pays moreattention to knowledge inculcation while neglects cultivation of students’ active thinking. Theauthor has analyzed and summarized the former research to the listening teaching of seniorhigh school, and finds that there are few cases that advocate to take context as guidance todevelop students’ contextual thinking model actively. In order to improve the listeningteaching, the teacher should change teaching strategies for enhancing students’ listening skills. In this thesis, the author has analyzed and summarized the traditional teaching mode, andis inspired by the thought of contextual model put forward by previous works. Based onrelevance theory and affect filter hypothesis, the thesis will discuss the importance of contextknowledge in English listening comprehension, and during the teaching practice, the authorhas carried out an experiment for three months in No.3Middle School in Xianxian of Hebeiprovince, in which the author has tried to apply the contextual model in listening teaching. Inthe present study, the author takes80students in two classes of Grade three as researchsubjects and makes a comparative study to experiment class and control class byquestionnaire, test and interview. The experiment results of statistical analysis conclude that this model could improve the listening teaching of senior high school efficiently. Students hadbeen interested in listening classroom; they also had reduced test anxiety and increasedconfidence to their listening achievements. Furthermore students’ comprehensive ability ofusing English had been improved in a certain extent. However, due to the author’s individualability and the limited time, there are still some limitations in the current research, and theexisting problem needs to be further studied and solved.
