Study On Volunteer Work In Colleges And Universities From The Perspective Of Moral Education

This paper proposes new understanding and ideas for volunteer work in the perspective of moral education. Meanwhile, the author encompasses the university volunteer work in the scope of Moral Ecosphere, regarding moral education as the origin and fulcrum of the study, thus leading to the extension of the content of university voluntary work. Implementing of voluntary work, propagating of volunteerism, constructing of voluntary culture as well as establishing of university cultural consciousness enclose the core of Education.The paper includes five parts, starting with expounding of some scientific concepts, such as Voluntary work, Volunteerism and Voluntary Culture, indicating the main clue of the article and the scope of the study. While analyzing the current status of university volunteer work, it generalizes the moral educating value of university volunteer work and clarifies the relationship between university volunteer work and moral education. In the meantime, it summarizes the features and functions of university voluntary culture, putting forward the necessity and feasibility of cultivating a university volunteering culture consciousness, and then comes to the conclusion that volunteering culture should be considered as an essential component of university culture.The definition of the concept of moral education, voluntary work, volunteerism along with voluntary culture is of high priority in the paper. All the research on moral education and volunteer involved in this paper are achieved in universities. Recent years witnessed five stages of the volunteer work development in our country-starting from scratch, exploring, rising, developing and finally, the full participation of our nation--with rapid progress of volunteer work made in this process. At the same time, university voluntary work faces both opportunities and challenges. Currently, with university students’gradually maturing thoughts, integrating value from diversity and increasing rationality of self-evaluation, volunteer work faces a golden opportunity for wide spreading and broad participation. However, university volunteer work still leaves some place to be satisfied. One is the constantly changing intrinsic motivation of volunteering. The other is the incompleteness of managing and evaluating system. The third is the need for broadening the source of funding. The last is the requirement for a better guarantee of volunteers’rights and interests. In this paper, volunteer work and university moral education are compared in various aspects, such as objective and content, etc. The relevant analysis is made to illustrate the scientificalness and urgency to study volunteer work in the perspective of moral education.Based on the analysis of relationship between volunteer work and university moral education, the paper proposes the concept of university volunteering culture consciousness. No relevant accepted theory of university volunteering culture consciousness was presented in pre-existing papers. On the basis of comprehension of this concept, first raised by Xiaotong Fei, the author supposes that as a part of culture, we should cultivate volunteering culture consciousness. In addition, the Sixth Plenary Session of the17th Central Committee also demonstrates the need for cultivating a high level of culture consciousness and culture confidence so as to improve the civilization quality of the whole society. According to the trend of the university voluntary work development, the author shrink the concept of Culture Consciousness and make an effort to find means and ways of establishing university volunteering culture consciousness.There are three principal features of university volunteering culture:identity, representativeness and guidance. The importance of establishing volunteering culture consciousness lies in the diverse lifestyles, the various values and the multiple moral selections. University volunteering culture has four moral educational functions. They are, firstly, to deepen and innovate university moral education; secondly, to promote and cultivate students’comprehensive quality; thirdly, to shape and refine university culture construction; finally, to propel and enhance a harmonious society.The paper purposes that to establish university volunteering culture consciousness is to build Shape, Spirit, System and Substance."Shape" refers to material construction, which means the fundamental construction such as volunteers’clothing and symbols, etc."Spirit" stands for spiritual construction, aiming at inheriting and promoting volunteering spirits."System" implies the system construction, involving management mechanism and legal protection."Substance", otherwise, represents the ultimate essence of culture construction surpassing Shape, Spirit and System. In conclusion, volunteering culture is an important part of university culture. The authors hope to refine and promote university culture via establishing university volunteering culture consciousness, therefore, to propel the construction of the core value system of socialism and achieve the goal of harmonious society and campus.
