Examination as a means of training and selection of talent is widely concerned in society,at the same time it is highly controversial, especially as a national examination. The collegeentrance examination and the Imperial Civil Examination are the cases, both as the nationalexams, although in different periods, they have striking similarities and indivisible inheritancerelationship."History is the best teacher of people ", so researching the history and the reasonof rise and fall of the Imperial Civil Examination will help to provide reference for the reformof contemporary college entrance examination, which has a very important theoretical andpractical significance.The Imperial Civil Examination System taking Confucianism as main test content is thesystem for selecting talent, which fits political needs of Chinese feudal society, by way ofpublic examinations and fair form of admitting the best. It has went through the creation inthe Sui Dynasty, the foundation in the Tang Dynasty, the development in the Song Dynasty,the falling behind in the Yuan Dynasty, the height in the Ming Dynasty and early QingDynasty, and ultimately to the destruction at the end of the Qing Dynasty with1,300years inChinese history.With the feudal autocratic monarchy politics constantly strengthened, examinationsystem is developed and complete, and with the decline of the feudal autocratic monarchypolitics, it is demise. Its prosperity is due to the implementation and strengthening of thefeudal rulers, public participation and the pursuit of society, as well as the principle offairness of test impartiality and suitability of talent training. The internal cause of the ImperialCivil Examination’ s decline is the rigidity of form and content, while the latter can not adaptto the demand of economic and social development is the fundamental cause of their decline.In addition, in ancient China,“conservative, the lack of change" has become a national abuseof the social cause of its decline.Both the Imperial Civil Examination and the college entrance examination are held bythe state, they have similarities in talent selection function, the form of equity-orientedfeatures and functions of education orientation.But the two are essentially different, in theexamination content: the Imperial Civil Examination is domination of Confucianism, collegeentrance examination is all-inclusive; in the examination purposes: the Imperial Civil Examination is for the election of officials,while the college entrance examination is forfurther study. The relations and differences between the two has a strong reference to eachother. Although the Imperial civil Examination System has been abolished, but the spirit coreof fair implicated in the examination, is universal."Select the essence" can be used in modernsociety; the fair is the guidelines that the college entrance examination must insist on. At thesame time, we should learn the lessons of imperial examination decline in history, in thereform of today’s college entrance examination, keep pace with the times and updateexamination content, reform the examination form, so as to adapt to the development of timesand society. We also need properly handle the relationship between form and purpose, graspof the intensity and pace of the college entrance examination reform, guarantee the collegeentrance examination on the basis of equity and efficiency, enhance the scientificity anddiversity of the college entrance examination. Finally, correctly play the college entranceexamination’s role as education direction. The concrete measure about the reforms of thecollege entrance examination should unify the new curriculum reform in high school, and themeasure is to transform the functional localization of the college entrance examination and toreform the form and the content as well as the enrollment way of the college entranceexamination.
