Medium language refers to the teaching language teachers used in the class for their instructions. In foreign language classroom teaching, how to choose a reasonable medium language is the premise and essential condition for teacher’s delivery of knowledge and a series of language teaching. Over a long time, the academic researches on medium language though have reached agreement on its importance, there are still some different views regarding how to choose a proper medium language. Currently the elementary education in Inner Mongolia is gradually shifting from bilingual teaching of Mongolian and Chinese to trilingual teaching of Mongolian, Chinese, and English. With regard to the trilingual teaching medium language or foreign language teaching for students educated in minority languages, there are few in-depth researches.The survey data shows that:first of all, the surveyed teachers and students all agree with the importance of medium language; secondly, pluralistic phenomenon can be observed from the actuality of respondents’ medium language and intentions in medium language selection; thirdly, the respondents’use of different medium language and their intentions in a specific language are influenced by both subjective and objective factors; Finally, there are a lot of problems waiting for urgent solutions regarding the use of medium language for English teaching of middle school students who are instructed by Mongolian.Concerning the selection and application of medium language for English teaching of students who are instructed by Mongolian, the role and position of their mother language as a medium language should be particularly noticed, and the mother language can be used reasonably in order to display its positive functions better by proper use of different medium language. Meanwhile, it is also suggested to avoid blindly use of target language, compile English teaching textbooks which suit the Mongolian-instructed students and reinforce the construction of Mongolian teacher resources.At the same time, in the future it is also necessary to deepen the researches on foreign language teaching theories and modes in the multicultural context. For the convenience of ensuring the good teaching effect of foreign language classroom in the minority nationality regions.
