In the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language,there has always been controversy over the use of medium of instruction.Some scholars argue that instead of using medium of instruction,only the target language is used for teaching;some scholars believe that medium of instruction should be used to assist teachers to teach Chinese.However,after the four-month internship experience in Thailand,the author finds that most of the teachers use medium of instruction to teach Chinese because of the students' elementary level of Chinese and the teacher's elementary level of Thai language.Therefore,in this paper,the students of Joseph Middle School are taken as the object of study to research the students' needs and acceptance of the medium language and the use of the medium language at the primary level in teaching Chinese.In the first place,the author investigates the students and teachers of Joseph Middle School in Thailand.The questionnaire investigates students' acceptance of teaching materials,teaching language,and medium of instructional language,as well as teachers' use of the medium in all parts of the teaching.In the second place,the author analyzes the teaching cases at the primary level in teaching Chinese,examines the situation in which teachers use the medium language,and makes an analysis and evaluation of this.In the end,based on the results of questionnaire survey and case analysis,the author analyzes the role of English as a medium language at the primary level in teaching Chinese and offers proposals.
