Academic circles usually called university ‘organism of profound knowledge’.But since the beginning of the20th century, in the process of meeting various demandof the social, university has started to expand and increase the job blindly, and itsgoals and missions also have moved toward secularization and diversification. Thehuge organizational forms and internal operating mechanism have gradually movedaway from the initial orbit. In this way, it made some scholars who engaged in thestudy of profound knowledge, especially doing the basic and theoretical research, losethinking space. In addition, the university’s internal disciplines are constantlychanging as the development of science, in a certain sense,it not only limits thedevelopment of themselves, but also hinders the innovation of knowledge. Therefore,we need to set up an undisturbed organisms of profound knowledge, which can makeup for the defects of college. And the system of higher institute is just as a neworganizational model. In this study, the author discussed the topic of ‘Research onOrganization Operation of Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton’, which canprovide a reality basic for our country to build up institute.This paper is divided into six parts.The introduction chapter starts from the multivariant function of university andthe continuous refinement of discipline, revealing the fact that the university is nolonger a real ‘organism of profound knowledge’, which leads to the inevitability ofthe institute.The second chapter, firstly, introduces the early research university, especiallyJohns Hopkins university how to impact the Institute for Advanced Study; Secondly,this part points out that the organic combination—‘Educator, Philanthropist, andTalent’ takes an important role for the rapid establishment of the Institute forAdvanced Study in Princeton; the last two sections introduce the three coups and itsdevelopment process.The third chapter makes a deep analysis on the structure and organization of theInstitute for Advanced Study in Princeton. The organization involves in‘decision-making agencies’,‘Supervision and enforcement agencies’,‘administrativeagencies’,‘two-dimensional structure of academic’. And we will come to a decision:the characteristics of organizational structure in Princeton contain:(a)‘Moderate andsmall size’ of the organization (b) Master-centered (c) Personnel frequent mobility.The fourth chapter is the core of the thesis, which makes a deep analysis of theinternal operation mechanism and external operation mechanism.(a) The targetingorganization mechanisms—‘theoretical research and intellectual inquiry’,this section firstly, defining the profound knowledge that ‘Institute for Advanced Study,Princeton’ explores, secondly, and then from two aspects of personnel employmentmechanism and the objective evaluation mechanism introduces the importantmeasures in target management (b) The dynamic mechanism—‘curiosity-driven’,points out that curiosity and passion only in the healthy and harmonious environmentcan better play their roles. And then this part discusses how to provide goodatmosphere for scholars’‘curiosity’ in Institute for Advanced Study.(c)The donationsafeguard mechanism, first of all, this section introduces external security that is theUnited States culture and system guarantee in donations from the perspective of theoverall, and then, analyzes the internal donation management system of ‘Institute forAdvanced Study, Princeton’(d) The ‘independent semi-open’ exchanges andcooperation mechanism, first of all, this section introduces ‘Institute for AdvancedStudy, Princeton’ is an independent corporate units from the aspect of law, and then,introduces the relationships with Princeton University, the last part of the sectionintroduces the project cooperation with the outside world.The fifth chapter analyzes the existing problems and crises during the operationof ‘Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton’, such as budget difficulties, contradictionbetween the long-term of pure scientific research and the transient employingmechanism, the negative impact of the ‘master effect’, the crisis of masters-talent andso on. These issues also restrict the development of the Institute for Advanced Study.Finally, although there are some problems during the operation of ‘Institute forAdvanced Study, Princeton’, it is still a real ‘organism of profound knowledge’. Then,in contrast, the existing problems during the constructions of institutes for advancedstudy in China, such as the capital, talents, relationship with universities and the valueorientation. Also, at the end of the chapter the author provides some suggestions:(a)Whether these institutes for advanced in China can keep unique properties, whichdepends on whether they can muster the best talents. As the same, it is the key tohigher institutions that will continue to provide superior environment or a goodoperation guarantee mechanism for talents.(b)For ‘Institute for Advanced Study,Princeton’ itself, should also be appropriate to break the inner’ tranquility andharmony’, while maintaining the unique and advantageous position of the academicparadise.
