Scientific and technical writing is an important means ofscientific research and science teaching. Scientific and technicalwriting in the science teaching of middle school is a form of middleschool students’ writing by the methods of observation, experimentresearch. It is carried on through practice, experiment withscientific, innovative conclusions, and use language symbols suchas words, charts to describe the result.This research was carried out on textbooks--"American highschool mainstream-scientific discovery" series as the researchobject, according to the definition of scientific and technicalwriting, the definition of dominance and tacitness of scientific andtechnical writing, the classification standards. It was conducted byusing the content research. It studied the content of biology,physics, chemistry and geography on scientific and technologicwriting in the United States senior school. It aims to(1)understanding the presentation and types of scientific andtechnical writing in American science textbooks;(2) summarizing the characteristics of the scientific and technical writing inAmerican science education and enlightenments to our countryscience education in the application of scientific and technicalwriting;(3) understanding the characteristics of the Americanscience textbooks’ design and gaining the enlightenments of ourcountry’s science teaching textbooks.The analysis found that:(1) In the teaching textbooks of four families, the percentageand the average percentage of the after-school practice appearingin section of writing teaching textbooks about scientific andtechnical writing accounted for more than half and about half, bothmore than the body part and experiments.(2) In four families of the teaching materials, the percentage andthe average percentage of tacit scientific and technical writingwere both more than50%. They obviously were more than dominantscientific and technical writing;(3) The type of the application in scientific and technical writingwas the most in four families of the teaching textbooks:1) Biological teaching textbooks: The average account of thetype of the application in scientific and technical writing in the tacitand dominant writing of science and technology was66.7%;2) Physical teaching textbooks: The average percent of the typeof the application in the tacit and dominant writing of science andtechnology was75%;3) Chemical teaching textbooks: The average percent about thetype of the application in the tacit and dominant writing of thescientific and technical writing was71.58%; 4) Geographical teaching textbooks: The dominance ofscientific and technical writing not present in the teachingtextbooks; the type of the application in the tacit writing of scienceand technology accounted for69%;The conclusions:(1)The characteristics of scientific and technical writing inscience education of American high school were that:1) Curriculumattached great importance to the scientific and technical writing.2)Technical writing was the important tool in teaching, experimentingand evaluating.3) It attached importance to the cultivation ofstudent’s academic research ability;(2)The design features of American high school sciencetextbooks were that:1) The means of the evaluation werediversified.2) It attached great importance to the type of theapplication in scientific and technical writing.3) The form ofscientific and technical writing was diversified.The enlightenments from this research were that:(1) Our country’s science education should attach importanceto the education of teaching of the scientific and technicalwriting;(2) The form and type of application in scientific andtechnical writing was diversified;(3) It is a challenge for Chinesescience teacher in the writing accomplishment, the writing abilityand teaching ability;(4) The scientific and technical writing shouldbe designed into the content system of science textbooks.
