Zhu Xi, a famous educator in Song dynasty, has ever said:“if one is notinterested in learning, he will not enjoy learning”. According to the relevant survey,pupils’ interest in learning English is gradually reducing. How to make students“happy to learn, eager to learn” is the main objective of primary school Englishteaching. In order to achieve the goal set by the "English curriculum standards ofcompulsory education (2011version)"(hereinafter referred to as the "CurriculumStandard"),the teacher as a helper or guider plays an important role. And, the role ofmediator proposed by Vygotsky and Feuerstein coincides with the new curriculumabout teaching philosophy. Therefore, this paper attempts to study the teacher how toplay the mediated role effectively in promoting their teaching efficiency and thechildren’s English ability in the game-teaching class.This study mainly based on the teaching practice,survey questionnaires, aswell as interviews to explore “how do teachers play a mediated role in improvingstudents’ English ability in game teaching?The survey shows that the teachers’ awareness of the mediation as well as howto do it well has yet to be raised. Teachers as mediator, building the teaching scaffoldsby games in their ZPD,Not only stimulate the students’ interest of English study,promote the efficiency of students’ grasping of the knowledge, but also makesignificant progress in the end of term examination. As for how to better meet therequirements in the "Curriculum Standard" of prompting the students as all-rounddeveloped autonomy learners still needs all Chinese foreign language teachers workharder.The above result indicates that the more effective form of teaching to enhanceinteraction and communication of meaning in classroom, to stimulate students’interest and motivation in English study, from which teachers can well understand the language level of the learners, and therefore adjust the teaching process accordingly.By this way, this will meet the learner’s level, and promote the students’ overalldevelopment.This thesis is divided into five parts: the first part introduces the reason for thistopic, methods employed, related concepts as well as the domestic and foreignteacher’s mediated role, the status of the English game teaching leading to the subjectof this study; the second part is the necessity of teacher’s role as mediator in gameteaching both theoretically and practically; the third part, a form for teachers’mediated role in the game teaching will be built. And through the class observationreveal the characters of mediation in three phrases, prior-game, middle-game, andpost-game; the forth part will verify the mode with the teaching experiments andreach the result and suggestion; the last part is the conclusion, including a briefexplanation for the shortage of the paper, and outstanding issues that should be ofconcern in the following study.
