In the history of mathematics, as an important concept, function has beenevolved for more than200years. The students are to learn function from junior highschool, senior high school to university. Algebra formula, equation, inequality has adirect relation with the function, Because of its abstractness, the students have somemisunderstandings about function. The difficulty of function learning is a universalphenomenon in the process of students′learning. This paper tries to analyze themisunderstanding types and to explore causes of misunderstandings by surveyingjunior middle school students, and does put forward some teaching strategies in thelearning of function.This study conducted a questionnaire survey on the existence of difficultiesconcerning function teaching in two junior high schools in Qingzhou city. The surveyis based on the experimental textbook published by Qingdao Publishing House andcompulsory education mathematics curriculum standard (experimental draft)”. Tocarry on the survey, first I interviewed students in the third grade and knew theirlearning difficulties when it comes to the learning of function, by asking questions,such as attitudes towards these difficulties, how to overcome these problems. Then Idesigned the questions in the survey and got some suggestions from their teachers.According to the valuable comments they made, I design the more effectivequestionnaire. Then I investigated some students of two schools. I found five mainfive main difficulties through the sorting, classification, induction and summary of thesurvey. In order to find out the causes of these difficulties, I interviewed some of thestudents, Based on the results of interviews and teaching experience, I think thecauses of learning difficulties in function mainly include three aspects---functioncomplexity of knowledge, thinking development level and students′learning habits.The most important is to take effective teaching strategies and reduce the studentswith learning difficulties.According to the errors and interview results of the surveyquestionnaire, I carried out a long-term experiment in my own class. At last, I believe that junior high school students can overcome the difficulties of function learning andreduce the error in function learning from seven aspects:1inspire students to associate new knowledge with knowledge that have learned;2relate mathematic knowledge to the reality of life;3pay attention to students’ accurate application and understanding ofmathematics language and symbols;4Attach importance to the function of image and the combination of thinking toexplore the role of learning5attach importance to the cultivation of the thought of analogy;6strengthen the training of reading ability; improve the ability to analyzeproblems;7Strengthen the reflective learningFinally, the practical teaching process of above measures were applied to theexperimental class and has obtained excellent learning results.
