Kodaly Method is an approach to music education created by Zoltan Kodaly, a famous Hungarian composer and educator. It has been developed into a world famous approach, widely adopted and applied in the world.This approach covers many aspects of music education, including educational philosophies, teaching methods and techniques, and has many pedagogical implications to music education in elementary schools. Since it was introduced to China in late20th century, many Chinese music teachers have been trying to borrow ideas from this pedagogy, but the achievement has been far from satisfying.The present study conducted a survey on the school facilities, management on music education, classroom and extracurricular activities, music teachers’ qualifications and competence as well as teacher-student interaction in some elementary schools in Jinan city. It investigated into the status quo of music education in elementary schools in Jinan city through interviews and questionnaires among music teachers and students and made a tentative research into the feasibility of applying Kodaly Method in elementary schools in Jinan city.The questionnaires were designed for both the teachers and students. A total number of271valid questionnaires were collected, including15from the teachers and251from the students. The data was processed by SPSS and analyzed to find the existing problems for exploration on the feasibility of applying Kodaly Method in urban elementary schools in Jinan city. Based on the findings and a comprehensive research into Kodaly Method from monographs and journals, the present study proposed some measures on applying this method, with the aim to contribute to music education in China with first-hand data and to promote the application of Kodaly Method in China.
