On the basis of summarizing the history of the development of Social Work (SW) from the domestic and foreign research and reviewing the development process of SW education in China, this paper discussed the demand of practical talents of SW in the current social development, as well as the encountered problems in the process of cultivating the professional master degree education of social work (MSW). After providing a critical evaluation of the education program and policies or ordinances on MSW proposed by the Academic Degrees Committee of the Ministry of Education (ADCMOE), and the strategic planning put forwarded by the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MOCA) and other organizations according to the actual social demand, as well as the current situation of SW and MSW education in northwest China, the paper compared the training programs of MSW among the various colleges and universities, and found that a lot of problems existed in the current northwest China:(1) The social recognition is low;(2) Lack of teaching resources;(3) Teachers’ professional level is low;(4) Lack of laboratory, field training and practice bases;(5) Training program has not been effectively implemented;(6) The differences of education level between MSW and undergraduate education is big.According to the characteristics and the related problems in the development of SW education in colleges and universities in northwest China, and combined with the current situation of the development of social economy and culture in northwest China, as well as the market requirements of SW, this paper tried to seek a path for the reform and development of SW education, and explore a new development pattern of the MSW education in universities in northwest China.
