The Great Cultural Revolution is quite an important historical period since thefounding of the new China; during this period of time, China gradually got rid of theblockade and oppression of the western hostile countries. The leaders of the new Chinaled the Chinese people in regulating the international strategy and embarking on thepath of exploring international exchanges in sports activities. However, what kind ofimportant changes take place in China’s international exchanges in sports activitiesduring this period of time? What kind of opportunities and conditions doe these changesbring to China? All these issues will be discussed about in this paper. This paper takes “China’s International Sports Exchanges during the Time WhenChina’s Socialist Construction was Subject to Serious Setbacks” as the research objectand comes to the following conclusions by means of documentation method, historicalapproach, case study and logical analysis.First, the international sports exchanges is of vital importance to the diplomacy ofnew China and dealing with international relationship during the period of GreatCultural Revolution because sports activities are scarcely vulnerable to the influence ofnationality, region, language and customs among all the exchanges between differentnations. Meanwhile,Sports are prone to conform to the political needs. Therefore,theSino-US Ping-Pong Diplomacy emerged at that special historical stage.Second, a sound international environment serves as the precondition andguarantee for the smooth international sports exchanges. As international sportsexchanges submits to the overall national diplomacy policies, any historical stage shallgive full play to the unique social functions of sports and provide special diplomaticoccasions and approaches according to the social development and political needs. Third, during the period of the Great Cultural Revolution, the internationalsports exchanges adapted to the changes in international situation, thus promoting thedevelopment and improvement of China’s sports and creating favorable conditions forthe future emergence and take-off of China’s sports.Fourth, sports, as a social and cultural activity, will never get rid of theinfluence of politics. Therefore, in terms of international sports relationship, we shallface up to instead of avoiding the relationship between sports and politics and activelyseek solutions to properly handle the relationship between sports and internationalpolitics.Fifth, through the research on this period of history, we hold the view that theforeign aid policies taken by the leaders of new China might not be perfect but stillnecessary and appropriate if taking into account the special historical stage.
