In the1960s and1970s, facing of worsening youth moral phenomenon, moralrelativism and moral cognitive in America school also felt powerless. Through thecriticism and reflection of school moral education practice, new character educationcultivates good character of the individual to restore the social and moral order, with themethod of combining the advantages of other factions of moral education model on thebasis of the traditional character education. This approach got a broad support of theU.S. government and the community, and quickly carried out in American schools,known as the new character education. Character education has become the mainstreamof contemporary American School Moral Education, also been the development trend ofmoral education in schools. The new character education provides a valuable referenceto the school moral education reform. Currently, our country faces the transformation ofthe socio-political and economic structure, but the rapid economic and socialdevelopment has brought the students a lost of value selected. The moral crisis thatcommunity faces demands higher education must pay attention to the cultivation ofgood character, especially the character development of young university students. Thispaper attempts to study the American new character education, learning from thesuccessful experience, explore the character education of college students in China. Thisarticle is divided into four parts:The first part, mainly introduces the purpose and significance of this research, andthe research method of this study,present situation and character education.The second part, explains new concepts related to character education, analyses thereasons and manifestations of American new character education. Causes of the rise ofnew character education movement in America: the development of western moraleducation theory, current situation of American society and moral behavior, influence ofnew conservatism;The emergence of a large number of institutions: character education,character education is widely supported by the government and society, charactereducation and the emergence of a large number of works of.The third part, illustrates the main content of the new character education, basicprinciples and main features, and the new U.S. character education were evaluated.The fourth part, discusses the Enlightenment of American new character educationmovement points for Chinese college students’ character education. To strengthen thesocialist core values education of college students, including strengthening the education of socialist ideal and belief and patriotic sense of obligation and responsibilityeducation; To strengthen our excellent traditional moral education; Our college students’character education should adhere to the principle of "three close to", including close tolife, close to reality, close to students; Strengthen the three-dimensional interactionbetween school, family and community.
