Competition Stress coping of athletes and players is an important topic in sportpsychology. Where does the competition stress come from? How do athletes and playerscoping with it? We can get the answers from the researches on “stress source” and “copingstrategy”. However, due to the particularity of each sport, answers from these researchescannot be applied to our practice of psychological service to a certain team. As a result, inthis research, we focused on national badminton players. We studied their stress sourcesand coping strategies before and during games. Our aim is to provide some reference forsport psychologists to make effective, comprehensive and exercisable psychologicalregulation plan.In this study, we collected competition reports of national badminton players andarticles in “badminton” magazine as raw data. These data were analyzed by primary codingand secondary coding. Then we discussed the outcomes according to previous researchesand sport practice.Stress sources before match.17codes were obtained after primary coding.6categories were identified after secondary coding: significance of match, collectiveresponsibility, expectation of others, formidable rivals, physical and psychologicalsituation, distraction from training. These categories were further divided into: pressureand frustration. In discussion we compared the outcomes with previous researches.Coping strategies before match.16codes were obtained by primary coding.5categories were got after secondary coding: intensive training, preparations, avoidance andtransition, pouring out and self-regulation. There were4self-regulation strategies:positiveimplications for failure, search for one’s own advantages, rational thinking, shock therapy.A summary was made on characteristics of coping before match.Stress sources before match. We got16codes by primary coding and7categories bysecondary coding: scores, passive conditions, environmental distraction, partner congruity, stress responses. The structure was similar to stress sources before match.Coping strategies during match.13codes by primary coding and4categories bysecondary coding: tactic adjustment, seeking break and psychological state adjustment, external resources, pressure transferring. At last, we compared efficiency of the5strategiesand discussed about the “psychological tactics”.In the end, we talked about the limitation and deficiency of study. We have hadlimitation in data collection. Further research can use other methods as interview orbehavior observation.
