As an important cross-cultural communicative tool, English is widely used in thesociety nowadays. We need qualified people who have professional knowledge andhave a good command of English. Therefore, English teachers should apply the mostscientific and effective teaching methods in teaching.No matter what teaching approach is adopted, the ultimate goal is to equip thelearners with language skills and abilities, to improve their cross-culturalcommunicative competence. With the further research of teaching methods, there havebeen more discussions about the theoretical basis of the teaching approaches and thepractical implementation in the classroom activities.Communicative approach stresses that the aim of learning a language iscommunication, trying to make all the meaningful communication and languageapplication become the center of all the classroom activities. In this thesis, the authoranalyzes this teaching method, explains its origin, its definition, as well as the foreignand the domestic studies status in this field, and discusses the application of thisteaching method to oral English teaching in junior middle school in the aspects oftheoretical basis as well as Chinese middle school students’ English learningenvironment, students’ motivation to learn and their characteristics of foreign languageacquisition.By probing into the application of CA to oral English teaching in junior middleschool, the paper tends to explore some practical problems existing in the oral Englishteaching and tries to find some effective solutions. The students chosen are all fromShanghai Pudong Foreign Language School. They began to learn English when theywere in primary school even when they were in kindergarten, and their spoken Englishis relatively good. The study aims to explore a practical and effective method to helpimproving the oral English teaching for junior middle school students.According to the research, we find that when we apply CA, we should adjust itaccording to the current situation in middle school English teaching, so as to make itmore in line with real teaching and learning and improve students’ cross-cultural communicative competence.
