China is in the period of social transformation now, the state don’t provide jobsecurity and some other institutional security to the college students, accordingly, thecollege also changed its role and institution, and no longer provide meaningfulcollective support to the college students. As a result, the college students have tomake their own plan and living, and take the risk of their own choices, then thephenomena called individualization arises. Using the qualitative method, this researchexplores the occurrence mechanism of college students’ individualization, in order tomake out the college students’ course of life and inspect their reaction to thetransformation. The subjects of this research are three students from a college ofShandong province, they have typical tendency of individualization. Through theobservation and interview, I got the first-hand information. And the westernsociologists such as Zygmunt Bauman and Ulrich Beck and China’s scholar YunxiangYan, their theory of individualization are of great importance foe me to construct thetheory of this thesis.There are two thinking lines in this research. Firstly I investigated the students’four years college life from a vertical dimension, and gave a deep description of theindividualization that occurred during this time. The research have found that thestudents experienced an individualization soon after they enter the college, they haveto depend on themselves after being released from the college entrance examination.After being accustomed to the college life, students’ theme of life are all personalized,but the self-choice is merely a false impression, the ubiquitous institutions have actually controlled their life. That is to say, after being released from the collegeentrance examination, the students are trapped into the institutions again. The collegestudents are blamed by the society and institutions, this is their survival situation.From the transverse dimension, the occurrence of the college students’individualization is the combined action of the state, the college and the students.During the transformation from the planned economy to the market economy, thestate’s role has changed a lot, the colleges have to change themselves to adapt to thechange and meet the demand of the market, as a result, their authority and cohesionhave greatly reduced. The changes of the state and college have surely acted on thestudents, the students who lost their shelter have to plan themselves, go to the marketto compete with others. They have a strong desire to “live for themselves”. Theirsubjective initiative in turn prompt the institution to design for individual.Therefore, the college students’ individualization are the results of the interactivebetween the individual and the institution. The “institutionalized individualism” is thecore connotation of college students’ individualization. In an individualizedcircumstance students are in anxiety and feel isolated, they experience a risky life. Forthis reason, the author suggest that we should cultivate the students’ public spirit andgive them collective help to heal the highly individualization.
