China’s Southwest Ethnic Areas not only has the special geographical and political significance, but also has rich cultural connotations. With the emphasis on the protection of national culture and establishment of the three course system in New Curriculum Reform, school-based curriculum activities were enriched for the content of national culture in primary and secondary schools of the southwest ethnic groups. It is symbiotic relationship between culture and education. In this case. School education plays a key role of basic educational system, and school-based curriculum for the cultural heritage of southwest ethnic group opened up a space in the school field.In the basic education of the Southwest ethnic groups, school-based curriculum bear special cultural mission since its birth. That is cultivated the ethnic people and inherit the development of ethnic culture. It determines the School-based curriculum in the Southwest Ethnic Areas Ought cultural character, the specific performance can be broadly divided into three areas:the national character, as the national carrier of culture reflects the unique culture of the Southwest; educational, as a special cultural forms the process of cultural transmission and development, play to the function of intellectuals; ontological status of consciousness, with the cultural consciousness as a cultural body and vitality.However, through the fieldwork and related data analysis of Southeast Guizhou Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, we found that school-based curriculum of the ethnic culture in the area with practical issues as follows:cultural selection of one-sided, cultural interpretation of surface, and extrapolation of false prosperity without the inherent vitality. The roughness, randomness, and payable in curriculum development and implementation reflect the weakening of its cultural character, so it is difficult to assume the mission of cultural heritage and education. The cultural character weakening of school-based curriculum in the southwest ethnic groups due to the following aspects: curriculum as a tool of culture, weak of national cultural consciousness, lack of teachers’curriculum consciousness, utilitarian-oriented curriculum evaluation, Lack of teachers and funds.Finally, on the basis of cultural character demands and weakening reasons analysis, propose changes in the cultural role of the school-based curriculum, strengthen teachers and students’ cultural consciousness, enhance the teachers’ school-based curriculum consciousness, improving existing evaluation methods and the necessary support in terms of ethnic culture teachers and fund, etc. In this conditon, it would be strengthened the cultural character of the school-based curriculum in the southwest ethnic areas.
