The Economic growth of Guangdong Province mainly on export-oriented economy is mainly relying on raw materials and primary products. The extensive mode of economic growth features in relatively low value-added products, the low efficiency of energy utilization and at the end of the chain links of the international division of labour industry. So, the expansion of trade scale is the most important factor resulting in increased energy consumption of the region. In this paper, we use the input-output model to calculate the amount of total energy consumption coefficient and embodied energy in the import and export in the year of1997,2002,2005and2007, and then take the combination of SDA and LMDI decomposition analysis methods to explore the main factors which affect embodied energy in the foreign trade. According to the results of decomposition, we can indicate that the scale effect increases the consumption of embodied energy, technical effects can offset some increases and the structural effect is not significant in the overall trend. What’s more, since the year of2005, the structural effects of exports change from the negative effect into positive one, it indicates that the structure of export commodities of Guangdong Province is not beneficial to saving energy or reducing consumption in the recent years, and the potential of the structural effects will be exploited in the future. In order to distinguish the final source of the technical effects, we decompose the technical effects of exports into technology of intermediate inputs and technology of energy utilization. The results show that technical effect of energy utilization holds a large proportion of the total technical effect of the export trade, and also implies a greater contribution to the change of the embodied energy in the exports. But technical effect of intermediate input is unstable. And then, we decompose changes of embodied energy of net exports, it shows that the scale effect is the most factor increasing embodied energy of the trade, the structural effects tell us that exports are very prone to high energy-consuming products compared to the imports. In the last, the paper puts forward some political suggestions on the previous conclusions. For example, by the methods of appropriately controlling of the scale of economies, adjusting the industrial structure in foreign trade, improving the efficiency of energy use, introducing technology of energy and reducing energy consumption and so on, Guangdong Province can reduce the pressure of regional energy consumptions, achieve the harmonious development of economic growth and energy consumption and achieve regional sustainable development in the future.
