With the trend of economy globalization and the fast development of informationtechnology, the competitive between the companies, prefectures, countries becomesfiercer. Industrial agglomeration which has the advantages in economies of scale, economics of scope and knowledge sharing become an important means of elevatingcompetitiveness, developing economy. As the strategy of developing the westernregions is pushed forward in2000years, to develop western economy and elevatewestern competitiveness is the most important task for western China. By thepredominance of industrial agglomeration, it becomes one kind of important measure todevelop western economy, so to study industrial agglomeration degree of western Chinais important. The main contents of the paper are to study the industrial agglomeration degree ofwestern China. The paper consists of five chapters. Chapter one, which is anintroduction includes the background, object, significance of selecting the topic, and thestructure of the paper, some relevant concepts. Chapter2is the literature review ofindustrial agglomeration theories from home and abroad, the content includes4aspects:the origin and development of industrial agglomeration theories, the agglomerationcauses; the agglomeration effects; the agglomeration phenomenon. Chapter3andchapter4is the part of empirical analysis, which is the emphasize part of the wholepaper. The two chapters measures the agglomeration degree of western twelveprovinces twenty manufacturing industries in2001-2009by means of industrialagglomeration static index (concentration ration of industry index, the space ginicoefficient index, location quotient index) and dynamic index. The industrialagglomeration dynamic index considers time factor comparison with static index.Chapter5is last chapter get the final verdict based on the first two analyses and putforward some suggestions about how to develop western industrial agglomeration. The paper uses the methods combined normative and empirical analysis, static anddynamic analysis, and draws the conclusions. The conclusion indicates that as a wholethe agglomeration degree of western manufacturing industry is low, and theagglomeration degree is affected by natural resources and environment condition tosome degree. The higher industries are limited to the following categories: laborintensive industry, resources intensive industry and prioritized industry because ofhistory factors, the agglomeration degree of some technology intensive industry is notoutstanding. The agglomeration degree of some provinces where the economy has developed rapidly is enhancing, such as Chong Qing. The agglomeration ascendency ofsome resources intensive industry is diminishing. Because of single resources intensiveindustry, the extending of the downriver industry chain is limited and the products havelow added value, the industry lack of competitiveness. The gap of the agglomerationdegree of western twelve provinces is large, but the development of industrialagglomeration in western China has a broad horizonand bright prospect.
