Following the development of human civilization, the urbanization levels of all the countries in the world also rise ceaselessly. The developed countries have entered the urbanization mature stage while China is still in the acceleration stage. The emergence of more problems along with the urbanized advancement speeding up makes the study of the urbanization level appearing more and more important. Yet there have been many studies in the economics literature on urbanization level abroad and in Mainland China, but due to huge differences among conclusions available because of the specific conditions around various areas and diverse evaluation methods by different scholars, so it is necessary to further research and study. In this work, we analyze influences of urbanization level of China’s286cities and also suggest a new index system for evaluating urbanization level based on summarizing the results of both at home and abroad. Cities have often been compared with biological entities in both classical studies in urban sociology and in resent research concerned with urban ecosystems and sustainable development. According to the biology model, many diverse properties of cities are shown to be power law functions of population size with scaling exponents,β,that fall into distinct universality classes. In general, the range of exponents is from0.8to1.2, the bigger it is, the better the property that corresponds to certain exponent is at a higher level of development. We reference this power law function to estimate each exponent which is seen as a standard by using SPSS16, and select relevant data of286cities from CHINA CITY STATISTICAL YEARBOOK2009as the research obiects. Then it shows the urbanization level of China in this paper by analyzing the quantity relationship of all exponents in range, and raises problems in China urbanization process. This paper also uses the most common data analysis method, factor analysis method, to estimate the urbanization level of China and conclude existing problems. Finally, we put the two kinds of analysis methods combining to measure the current China’s urbanization level and obtain more accurate conclusions. According to the analysis results, the paper proposes some countermeasures for the development of China’s urbanization process following a fast and healthy path, and also provides a new method for future urbanization level measurement.
