The Island refers to the naturally formed land areas which aresurrounded by seawater and above the surface of water at high tide, including residental island and non-residential island. As a sea land, island’sresources include not only the mainland of the island but also the intertidalzone. Islands and its surrounding areas have a lot of natural resources. Therefore, with the exploitative and use of the islands we can get all kinds ofresources we need, so as to solve the problem of shortage of resources in ourcountry. However, although our country’s islands are very rich in resources, there are many shortcomings in the exploitative and management of islands. With the activities of exploitative and utilizing resources in islands increased, the protection and management of islands’ natural resources are imperative.Islands’ protection and management are based on island planning, of whichthe basis and core are to master the lands’ use suitability and exploitativeintensity. What’s more, the purpose of exploitative the lands’ use suitabilityand intensity evaluation is to set island planning, realize the land resources’effective protection, scientific management and sustainable utilization.Consequently, this paper’s aim is to develop the residental islands’ usesuitability and intensity evaluation, and provides some technologies which arefit for developing the lands’ use suitability and intensity evaluation of theresidental islands. In addition, take the Donghai island for example, use the2006-5SPOT images and2010ALOS images as data sources, regardpeople’s experience of lands’ exploitation and utilization and also siteselection as basis, and consider the frequent degrees of the levels combinationof evaluation factors as foundation, finally with the aid of ArcGIS software’s powerful space analysis tools, this paper gives the evaluation on lands’ usesuitability and developmental intensity, and the evaluation results wereanalyzed. The following aspects are the main research conclusions:(1) On the basis of reading literature at home and abroad and masteringthe methods of the suitability of land use and exploitative intensity evaluation, this paper set the evaluation process which are suitable for the residentalislands on account of land resources’ specificity.(2) The author gives the residental islands’ land use suitability assmentprocedures and methods, including the choices and classification ofevaluation factors, the determination of the evaluation units, single factorevaluation, the confirmation of evaluation factors’ weight, synthesizedmultiple factor evaluation method and assessment results classification andgrading method.(3) Besides, this paper also gives the process and methods of landresources exploitative intensity in the residental islands, includingconstruction of the evaluation model, creation of the attribute space, theconfirmation of the evaluation index’s weight, the acquirement of the modelparameter, exploitative intensity evaluation and assessment resultsclassification and grading method. The suitability assessment is the basis ofthe intensity of exploitative evaluation.(4) Take Donghai island for example, making the use of the suitabilityevaluation method, the author makes an overall evaluation on2006and2010land use of suitability and divides the assessment results into several levels, they are inaptitude, critical appropriate, general appropriate, mediumappropriate and extremely appropriate. Each level’s proportion in2006and2010were0.63%,12.46%,33.46%,30.13%,23.32%, and0.97%,14.17%,39.69%,22.27%,22.90%. The assessment results showed that the land use ofDonghai island was better as a whole, especially the mixed residential, education style land, unexploited beach and mangrove beach. And industrialand mining warehouse lands’ suitability was poor. (5) In the Donghai island, for instance, taking advantage of the methodof developmental intensity evaluation, this paper gives evaluation on landresources’ exploitative intensity in2006and2010, and divides the assessmentresults into6degrees, they are weak, less weak, medium, less strong, strongand extremely strong. Each level accounted for94.00%,3.28%,1.98%,0.59%,0.04%and0.11%. The results showed that the Donghai island landresources’ exploitative intensity was less weak in2006and2010. Moreover, the research also showed that the island’s land resources’ exploitativeintensity is related to the changes and different attributes of the land usepatterns and possesses the zonal characteristics. In a word, the exploitativeintensity in the human frequent areas is higher than in the infrequent areas.(6) Through the examples of analysis, we can come to a conclusion thatthe evaluation processes and methods of the land exploitative suitability andexploitative intensity given in this paper are proved to have a good effect. Theevaluation result can not only make the statistical analysis, but do the visualdisplay in the unit of land use types, which may express the details of the landuse type’s suitability and exploitative intensity directly. Most importantly, theevaluation results can service for the managerial and decision-makingdepartments.
