Since the1990s, China’s retail industry has made remarkable achievements after10years development, which was promoted by the reform of the circulation systemand opening up. In addition to significantly enhancing sales, format structure haschanged a lot. With the development of our national economy, emerging formats ofthe retail industry spring up like mushrooms. China’s retail industry was growing fast,and the dominance of retail market has been gradually strengthened. The developmentof the retail industry has caused much attention of those from all walks of life, butthere were few researches about the evolution of the retail format in the academiccircle. There is still no powerful explanation of the relationship between the retaildevelopment and the evolution of retail format.Through the analysis of the course of the development of our country’s retailindustry in this paper, the characteristics of the development of retail at each stagewere summarized, and analyse the different indicators at each phase using quantitativemethod. The change and development of the main formats are further researched.In this paper, the performance of the retail development and the evolution of thebusiness structure are combined. And there is comprehensive analysis on the factorsthat effect the performance of China’s retail industry and the relationship with theevolution of formats. We hope that can provide a new train of thought for the retaildevelopment and rational distribution of retail formats. At last, our country’s retailtrade has nice and fast development.There are five parts in this paper as follow:First, the background, method andsignificance of this paper are mainly introduced. Second, the related theory of thedevelopment of the retail formats, literature review of retail formats and systemanalysis of the evolution of retail formats are mainly introduced. Third, the retailbusiness modes’ evolution process were analyzed, and detailed comparative analysisis done for the main formats. Forth,the overall performance of the main retailformats is mainly analysed by the method of quantitative analytics. The results provethat the performance of China’s retail market can be promoted by increasing marketconcentration, diversifying the formats of retail and increasing capital intensity. Thelast part is the research conclusion and puts forward some policy recommendationsfor the retail development. In my opinion,according to the practical situation of theretail development in china, strengthening government supervision and industry self-regulatory, paying attention to the integration and differentiation of retail formats,increasing the market concentration and capital investment and improving resourceutilization could promote the long-term development of china’s retail industry.
