Tourism industry,specially the tourism employee, is responsible for delivering happiness to consumers. However, the travel agency managers have to burden heavy pressure and excessive work for so many problems inside and outside the industry, such as the unsound market, fierce competence, and the unsuitable enterprise management mechanism and system, leading to job burnout which is harmful to both travel agency managers’job happiness and consumers’satisfaction to tourism industry. Job burnout, as a more and more prevalent career disease, has aroused high attention by the domestic organization behavior scholars and abroad. It was firstly found and concerned in the helping industry. Travel agency is the most comprehensive enterprise and significant in tourism attributes among the tourism industry, where much attention have been drawn to the tour guide, not the travel agency manager. As the elite in tourism industry, how are the job burnout of travel agency managers? Which are the causes to their job burnout? It’s worthy to be concerned.This paper will use questionnaire investigation and content analysis separately to undertake two successive research to mainly solve the following four questions:how did the job burnout of travel agency manager develop from2006to2009? Compared with the professional managers in other industry, what are the differences between them? What are the reasons for job burnout of travel agency managers? How do them affect the developing process of job burnout? The data are collected from the two times cross-year investigation in2006and2009. In that case, we can explore the changing trend and developing process of job burnout of travel agency managers, enriching the basic theory and finding the specialty of tourism in theory, providing decision-making foundation for improving job happiness of travel agency managers and fertilize more satisfactory tourism.We have four findings,①Most travel agency managers have suffered from mild job burnout. Among the three demensions, Emotional Exhaustion has always been the most serious one. From2006to2009, the overall Job Burnout of travel agency managers declined significantly.②Compared with the professional managers in the other industry, the job burnout of travel agency managers is lower, among which only is the emotional exhaustion higher. It can be inferred that the travel agency managers work with pain and happiness.③ The job burnout of travel agency managers mainly stem from three positive factors, including conflicted role, job controlling and supporting from organization and society, which may cause and aggravate job burnout, and one negative factor, emotion intelligence, which refrain and even eliminate job burnout.④The job burnout of travel agency managers develops in the process of Emotional Exhaustion-Emotion Mobilization-Depersonalization, during which Emotion Mobilization is the main response to Emotional Exhaustion and affect the first stage of job burnout development whereas emotional intelligence the second stage.
