Producer services are the fastest growing industry in the current world economy, which at the same time is the most important force in prompting economic growthand urbanization. As the fastest growing and the most competitive region in China,The Yangtze River Delta is under its critical period of accelerating the developmentof urbanization, facing changes of the late stage of industrialization to the postindustrial era. The main feature during this period is the rapid growth of theProducer services. The task of this period is to shift the economic growth patternfrom the high-cost, low value-added to the low-cost, high value-added, and to speedup the process of regional integration. As a result, the study on the spatial differenceof Producer services in the Yangtze River Delta is very important. After the systematic study of the existing literatures, this paper finds out that theseparate study of the spatial difference of Producer services is from the point ofeither agglomeration-diffusion phenomenon or the spatial structure. This way of studycould not find out the rule or the fundamental reason of the spatial difference ofProducer services. After reading the existing literatures and studying the Neweconomic geography, we believe that the spatial difference of Producer services isunder the joint effort of the agglomeration power of learning, sharing and matchingand the diffusion power of limited space and knowledge spillover, of which theknowledge spillover is the fundamental driving force and the agglomeration-diffusionis the main power. Due to the difference of the initial accumulation of knowledge andhuman capital between regions, the differentiation of Producer services would finallyforms a specific spatial structure. This kind of structure will change with the externalenvironment of the regional urban agglomeration structure and the regionalmanufacturing layout. Then, this paper rises a analytical framework of the spatialdifferentiation of Producer services relying on the new economic geography theory.Under this analytical framework, this paper uses the differentiation index, Ginicoefficient, Hoover coefficient, Moran index and the local Moran index to study theindustrial and spatial features of the spatial difference of Producer services. The studyfinds that the main characteristic of the differentiation of Producer services of theYangtze River Delta is as follows. The whole industry is mainly about agglomeration, while the degree of differentiation of various segments of the industryhas obvious differences; the regional difference is obvious; the gap between industryis gradually narrowing; different regions have significant spatial association patterns;the region as a whole shows core-peripheral space structure. This paper gives theinterpretation of these characteristics under the theoretical analysis framework.According to the analysis above, this paper rises three hypothesis that the mainreason of the spatial differentiation of Producer services are the accumulation ofknowledge, the current human capital, the regional city grade system, and the regionalmanufacturing layout. Then make a empirical text using the spatial econometricsmethod. The results show that the average education years representing the averagehuman capital and the size of the city on behalf of the status of the city in the regionalcity grade system are positively correlated with the development of Producerservices, while as the pure scale diffusion of the relative size of local manufacturinghas a negative impact on the development of productive service industry. At last, according to the previous theoretical analysis and empirical test, this paper draws itsdirect conclusions and extended conclusions, and explains the deficiency of theresearch and directions for further study.
