The Study On The Rural Pension Problem In The Context Of Urbanization

With the rapidly increasing phenomenon of aging population in China, the pensionproblem has become a very important issue. As the rural elderly are in the vast majority allover the country, the pension problem strikes in rural areas particularly. For a long time,family pension which based on providing family support has been the most importantpension way in rural areas, and it has played an important part in the alleviation of ruralpension problem. However, the advance of urbanization has made many changes in ruralareas, such as social life, family size, interest structure within the family, traditional ideasand so on. These changes have weakened the functions of existing traditional rural familysupport. As a result, family pension has faced a huge challenge; the pension problem of therural elderly has become more and more serious.Theoretical basis for this article are Family support theory, Social exchange theory,Equalization of public services theory and Hierarchy of needs theory. The empiricalanalysis can help to draw conclusion that the advance of urbanization has weakened thefunctions of the rural family support for the elderly. Basing on this conclusion and ourcurrent situation, as well as the successful experience from foreign practices, I try to makesome effort to put forward constructive suggestions to solve rural pension issue under thebackground of urbanization.It is of great significance to solve the pension problem of the farmers effectively. Itssolution not only can raise the living standard of the rural elderly to share economic andsocial development achievement, can improve the situation of rural economics to narrowthe gap between urban and rural areas, but also can help to alleviate the instability in ruralareas and to promote social equity and justice. Above all, it will play a very important rolein the construction of our harmonious society.
