The formation and development of a metropolitan area plays a vital role in the coordinated development within the whole region, but the falling behind development of metropolitan areas in China has led to the inner imperfect coordination system. Thus it becomes necessary for us to improve these insufficiencies. Considering that the agglomeration and diffusion function of central cities is indispensable to the formation of metropolitan areas, this paper will make research on the disciplines of agglomeration and diffusion within central cities so as to give a better understanding of the formation and development of the metropolitan area. This paper does research on the disciplines of agglomeration and diffusion within central cities by making use of qualitative and quantitative analysis, factor analysis and impulse-response analysis:Firstly, we do analysis on the connotation and levels of disciplines of agglomeration and diffusion activies and make assumptions of its essential reason and general path by theoretical analysis, combining theories such as Product Life Cycle, innovation theory and grade process theory. In the meantime, we summarize the regulation of industrial agglomeration and diffusion. Then we carry out quantitative analysis to study the disciplines of agglomeration and diffusion within central cities with the data of Yangtze River Delta from three different aspects. Finally, we execute hypothesis testing with the methods of factor analysis and impulse-response analysis of WAR model to see whether the beforehand assumptions are true or not.The main innovations in the dissertation include the hierarchical, industry-dimensional analysis about the operating principles of agglomeration and diffusion within central cities and the study on the essence of them.
