Deserts in China are distributed throughout nine provinces, and they are grouped in westernregions as Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Gansu, and Ningxia. In recent years, desert tourismhas got a considerable development and has become an emerging tourism product accepted by thepublic. Meanwhile, the desert tourism has attracted wide attention of scholars and tourismprofessionals. However, having a late start, the desert tourism in our country is still in its infantstage. And there are many problems with the desert scenic spots development such as severehomogenization, the lack of profound cultural connotation and the imperfection ofenvironmentally-friendly construction. Therefore, how to develop desert tourism in depth, enhancethe competitiveness of it and achieve sustainable development of it have become urgent problemsto be solved.This thesis, on the basis of the review of related studies on desert tourism of Chinese andforeign scholars and status analysis of Xinjiang desert tourism development, making use ofPrincipal Component Analysis to analyze and evaluate Xinjiang desert tourism competitivenesssystematically, proposes goals and principle, function positioning, image design, productdevelopment of Xinjiang desert tourism by means of on-the-spot investigation and data collection.In the end, the study drew the following conclusions:(1)combining with harmoniousrelationship with human resources, desert tourism is a tourist activity based on the valuable desertecosystem, which can bring interest and excitement to the customer. Xinjiang desert is rich intourism resources, which is mainly in the Tarim Basin, Junggar Basin and eastern desert areas.With the combination of diverse landscape and high ornamental value, the desert resources areendowed with the connotation of culture of China’s western regions, which, has laid a goodfoundation to enhance the competitiveness of the Xinjiang desert tourism.(2)However, through thecomparison of comprehensive competitiveness of desert tourism of Gansu, Inner Mongolia,Qinghai, Ningxia with Xinjiang, it can be concluded that Xinjiang is inferior to others in terms ofregional transportation and economic level despite the advantages of rich desert resources. Tosome extent, the disadvantages restrict the development of Xinjiang desert tourism.(3)Therefore, in the process of development, we should try to avoid the weaknesses, highlight the unique cultureconnotation of China’s western region, step up publicity efforts, and improve the infrastructure tofully explore the competitive advantage of Xinjiang desert tourism.(4)Xinjiang desert tourismproduct development should start with product quality, structure and product portfolio and otheraspects to explore the cultural connotation, increase the value of experience, and improve productquality. At the same time, product development should conduct the optimization and adjustment ofnumber and structure, pursue the rational design of distinctive desert tourism route and implementthe portfolio development of desert tourism product.(5)The desert is an ecologically fragile area,so at the same time of accomplishing the development of Xinjiang desert tourism, we must hold tothe idea of ecological desert tourism and establish a whole new development concept of deserttourism in Xinjiang.(6)We must strengthen the construction of upgrading the competitive of Xinjiang deserttourism and stress the leading function of government in order to promote the innovation in the view spot ofXinjiang Desert Tourism. Meanwhile we must accelerate the construction of public transportation and the safetysystem in Xinjiang, which will be served as the foundation for the further development of Xinjiang deserttourism and will create pleasant environment for the travelers.
