In recent years, China’s financial sector is gradually opening to the outside world.Banking is the main part of the financial sector, and there is an increasingly fiercecompetition between banks. How to improve competitiveness and get advantages hasbecome a major subject of study for commercial banks faced with many competitors fromthe market. The promotion of their competitiveness requires a management strengthening,a clear strategic positioning, and innovations of development mode. As an advancedmanagement method, benchmarking can be used into commercial banks in China to helpthem make up for deficiencies and promote the competitiveness by learning frombenchmark object.This article firstly introduces the commercial bank competitiveness theory andbenchmarking management theory, and analyzes the application value and feasibility basedon these two theories for commercial banks in our country to implement benchmarking.Then we chose China Everbright Bank as the study object, and China Merchants Bank asthe benchmark, analyzes both current status, and establishes the index system to evaluatecommercial banks’ competitiveness. This index system includes three specific aspects——current competitiveness, potential competitiveness, and lasting competitiveness. Throughthe contrastive analysis of the specific indicators of each aspect, we find out the disparitybetween Everbright Bank and Merchants Bank and existing problems, then put up withcorresponding solutions. For the three aspects, the last part of this article discussesspersefic recommendations in detail.
