In modern China, railway, as an advanced means of transportation, came into Chinaalong with the aggression of Western powers. Chinese people gradually waked up whileWestern powers are taking away the rights of China’s railway. At the beginning of20thcentury, in a vigorous campaign to recover the right-of-railway, the people in Anhuifounded Commercial railway companies, which opened the prologue to the preparation ofmodern Anhui railway. Since then, Anhui people has made unremitting efforts for theconstruction of railways, and has contributed a lot to the modernization of Anhui province.The thesis systematically discussed the preparatory meetings, preparation andconstruction of Anhui railway during the first20years in the20th century, which can bedivided into the end of the Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China. The maincontents are the construction of commercial railway of the end of the Qing dynasty, theconstruction of the Anhui section of the Jinpu railway, the influences of the Jinpu railwayon the Northern Anhui province, the construction of Anhui railway in early Republic ofChina and the combat for the railway rights with Western powers during that period. Onthis basis, the thesis is to explore the orientation of the railway lines during thedevelopment of Anhui railway. The thesis points out the cause of the orientation from threeaspects, the natural geographic location, socio-economic conditions, and the political anddiplomatic patterns. Also, the thesis divides Anhui railway into interland line andinter-provincial contact line and summarizes the impact that regional history prescriptiveon the orientation of railway so as to serve for the reality.
