The Planting And Impact Of Yunnan Economic Crops From Qing Dynasty To Chinese Republic

Economic crops is a very special and active crop type of agriculture, it has a direct link with the market and industry. Economic crops are not only an important metrics of agriculture economy development level of a region but also an important performance of handicraft and market economy development level. Therefore, the study of a region’s historical economic crops’ development is undoubtedly an important way to know the level of economic development in this region. Period from Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China is not only an all-around development period of Yunnan economy, but also an important development period of economic crops. This paper aims to investigate the economic crops of the period from Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China to reflect the development of Yunnan economy during this period from the other side.This thesis is divided into six parts:The first part is introduction, which includes the main reason for the topic, the review of academic research and the methods, emphasis, difficulty and innovation of the thesis research.The second part introduces economic crops of Yunnan before the Qing Dynasty. It introduces fiber crops (kapok and Zhe), sugar crops (sugar coconut and sugar cane), beverage crops (tea) into three categories, and discusses the place of origin of above-mentioned economic crops, as well as their distribution before the Qing Dynasty in Yunnan.The third part discusses the economic crops cultivation situation of Yunnan from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. Through the collection of Yunnan local chronicles property data in the Qing Dynasty, it introduces the planting especially the planting area expansion of main economic crops in the Qing Dynasty, and considers that after opening the treaty ports in the end of Qing Dynasty it is the new era of economic crops development in Yunnan. In the Republic of China, Yunnan’s economic crops have new opportunities of development in market, science and technology, industry and so on. It has the many changes in economic crops’ planting area, variety, improving and its experimental planting. This part elaborates the hobby crops, fiber crops, beverage crops, sugar crops, oil crops of this time.The fourth part analyzes the historical evolution of cash crops in Yunnan Province. This thesis mainly studies the Yunnan’s economic crops development and changes in the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China from the kinds of economic crops, planting area, techniques (planting and processing) and market. These changes of Yunnan cash crops is not only the result of geographical pattern changing which occurred after the opening of trading ports of Yunnan economy, but also the performance of Yunnan economic structure changing accordingly.Section V discusses the relationship between Yunnan cash crops and Yunnan economic and social development from Qing Dynasty to the period of the Republic of China. Thesis investigates the influence of the development of cash crops on Yunnan economy through studying the relationship changes of cash crop and economic structure, relationship changes of debit, credit and tenancy and the impact on mountain district development. On the other hand, the paper explores the impacts of cash crops on Yunnan Society from changes in three areas:Yunnan diet practices, marriage customs, ritual practices. In short, from the Qing Dynasty to the period of the Republic of China, the development of cash crops’influence on Yunnan economy and society is multi-faceted and far-reaching.The sixth part is the conclusion. Thinking that the Qing Dynasty is the initial development period of cash crops and the period from the later Qing Dynasty after opening trading ports to the Republic of China is the prosperous period of economic crop development; the development of Yunnan cash crops has been caused by various factors such as modern international market, modern industry, modern agriculture techniques, so to some extent, it can be said that the development of cash crops of Yunnan is an important part of agriculture modernization which is an part of Yunnan modernization; tobacco, poppy, tea and other cash crops play an increasingly important role in economic and social life in Yunnan, which is determined by Yunnan special natural environment and is an important performance of Yunnan economic development level.In short, the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China is an important period for the development of cash crops in Yunnan, laying the foundation for Yunnan economic crops today.
