Bulk is one of the main properties of the paper.Improving the paper bulk can reduce theamount of paper pulp to product paper with the same thickness,which can realize thelightweight of paper and the effective utilization of resources.Adding organic bulking agent isone of the important methods to improve the paper bulk.In this paper,styrene-acrylate emulsion (SAE) and rosin modified SAE were prepared byusing rosin, butyl acrylate (BA),2-Ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) as functional monomers, andstyrene(St), methyl methacrylate (MMA) as co-monomers.The structure and properties ofemulsion were characterized by using infrared spectroscopy, Zeta potential and particle sizeanalyzer.The influence of the kind and amount of functional monomer, emulsifier types anddosage on the properties of emulsion was researched.The better processing conditions ofdifferent SAE are listed as follows. The properties of styrene-butyl acrylate emulsion (MMA-St-BA), which prepared when monomer ratio was MMA:BA:St=1:1.5:4,emulsifier ratio wasCTAB:TX-10=5:1,dosage of emulsifier was8%, are better.The properties of styrene-acryliciso-octyl ester emulsion(MMA-St-(2-EHA)), which prepared when monomer ratio wasMMA:2-EHA:St=1:2.5:4,emulsifier ratio was CTAB:TX-10=3:2,dosage of emulsifier was5%, are better. The properties of rosin modified styrene-butyl acrylate emulsion (rosin-MMA-St-BA), wich prepared when monomer ratio was rosin:MMA:BA:St=2:1:0.5:4,emulsifier ratio was Y:TX-10=3:2,dosage of emulsifier was10%, are better.The propertiesofrosin modified styrene-acrylic iso-octyl ester emulsion(rosin-MMA-St-(2-EHA)), whichprepared when monomer ratio was rosin: MMA:2-EHA:St=2:0.8:2.5:4,emulsifier ratio wasY:CTAB:TX-10=6:2:2,dosage of emulsifier was12%, are better.By using SAE as paper bulking agent, the influence of the kind and amount of functionalmonomer, emulsifier types and dosage on the using effect of the emulsion wasresearched.The result is that the effect of unmodified SAE, MMA-St-BA emulsion andMMA-St-(2-EHA) emulsion, to improve the paper bulk is very small.After rosin modified,the effect of SAE used as paper bulking agent has been improved obviously. The paper bulkhas been improved7.9%by using1%rosin-MMA-St-BA emulsion, which was preparedwhen monomer ratio was rosin:MMA:BA:St=2:1:0.5:4,emulsifier ratio was Y:TX-10=3:2anddosage of emulsifier was10%. The paper bulk has been improved6.2%by using1%rosin-MMA-St-(2-EHA) emulsion, which was prepared when monomer ratio wasrosin:MMA:BA:St=2:0.6:2.5:4, emulsifier ratio was Y:CTAB:TX-10=6:2:2and dosage ofemulsifier was12%. By using aluminum sulfate and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) as retention agent, andusing rosin-MMA-St-(2-EHA) emulsion, which was prepared when monomer ratio wasrosin:MMA:BA:St=2:0.6:2.5:4, emulsifier ratio was Y:CTAB:TX-10=6:2:2and dosage ofemulsifier was12%, as paper bulking agent, the influence of retention agent on the usingeffect of paper bulking agent and the effect of different bulking agent addition on theproperties of paper were researched.The result is that, paper bulk has been improved8.8%byusing2%paper bulking agent, which has the relatively better increasing efficiency.Theaddition of aluminum sulfate and CPAMcan improvenot only the using effect of bulky agent,but also the effect of bulking agent on paper strength properties.Paper bulk can be improvedby7.3%and strength properties of pape have not been reduced when using1%aluminumsulfate and0.03%CPAM.
