An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Water Pollution And Social-economic Development In Bohai Sea Region

Bohai Sea Region of Liaoning province is the important component of BohaiGulf. It includes Dalian, Jingzhou, Yinkou, Panjin, Huludao, and the counties thatunder their jurisdiction. Due to the rich natural resources and convenienttransportation, it has grown to the important support to Bohai economic rim. In recentyears, this region has experienced economic boom with its own feature. Cities in thisrim have formed industrial clusters that based on Petrochemical, metallurgy,equipment manufacturing and shipbuilding. But their emissions have put muchpressure on the ecological environment. Therefore, methods should be carried out tostrengthen the protection of the environment in order to guarantee the social,economical, and environmental sustainable development of this region.With the study of regional social and economic evolution and pollution loadoutput status, this thesis aimed at fulfilling the sustainable development of Bohai Searegion by establishing a model to put out the relationship between the social andeconomical development and pollution output, then put forward a correspondingcountermeasure.This thesis includes the following six parts:Part one: Introduction.It introduces the research background and the currentsituation about the relationship between economic development and environmentpollution both at home and abroad, and then summaries the related bibliographyabout the EKC curve model from the theory and empirical aspects, to presents atheory and method reference to the research on the relationship between the socialand economical development and pollution output of Bohai Sea Region. At last, ittells the content, research method and innovation of the thesis besides the meaningand aim of the research.Part two: The general information of Bohai Sea Region.It introduces thegeography, natural resources, economic situation, and costal rivers quality of theregion. In specific, the geographical position, topography, geomorphology, hydrology, meteorology, vegetation, water resources quantity, mineral resources, administrativedivision, population, urbanization, economy development level, and coastal waterenvironment.Part three: Investigation and diagnosis of pollution structure To investigate andanalyze the industrial, living, and agricultural pollutant sources in five cities of BohaiSea Region. The survey includes the production and emission of industrial, living,livestock and poultry breeding, farming and aquaculture pollutants. It also estimateand evaluate the pollution load of COD, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and totalphosphorus, thus to research the main source and contribution of all kinds ofpollutants.Part four: The analysis of economic boom and the contribution of waterpollution outputTo analyze the relationship between economic development andwater environment by building a model which is about the relationship betweenIndustrial COD, industrial ammonia, life COD, life ammonia output and per capitalGDP of the five cities mentioned above. The model was build based on the EKCtheory.Part five: conclusion. Studies have shown that the sequencing of major pollutionfactor in Bohai rim of Liaoning province is ammonia, total phosphorus, total nitrogen,COD, petroleum, lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, arsenic,cadmium, totalchromium. It suggests that the pollutions of study area is mainly nutrients and organic.Look from the source structure, pollutant emissions mainly come from urban life;Look from the spatial distribution of pollution sources and pollutants emissionsmainly come from Dalian city. Analysis of key industry source, including chemicalindustry, paper industry pollution output is larger. By establishing the EKC model,pollution index and per capita GDP falls between inverted U, U, inverted N, N typecurve relationship, and the industrial structure, the influence of environmental policyand technology, Liaoning industrial pollution in the circum Bohai Sea Region will becertain to improve, but life still has the trend of worsening pollution.Part six: Environmental protection countermeasures of Bohai Sea Region. It issuggested that pollution regulations of key industries should be strengthened, andpollution discharging system be carried out comprehensively. It also requires improving sewage facility construction of urban sewage plant, rural biogas plant,oxidation pond, and wet land area, as well as the construction of environmentalcapacity when it comes to emergency. It mentions to increase technological input andlegal construction, adjust regional economic growth pattern, optimize the industrialstructure, so as to realize the social, economic, and environmental sustainabledevelopment.
