Since China’s accession to the WTO in2011, the domestic economy has achieved aleap of development, the three northeastern provinces in China also keep up with thepace of the development, and have made remarkable achievements, with the sustainedrapid development of economy, and people begin to pay more and more attention to theenvironmental problems. How to improve the environmental quality, realize thesustainable development of economy and environment, has become the hot issue ofcommon concern to scholars. In the recent years, many scholars use EnvironmentalKuznets Curve (EKC) model to analyze the relationship between economic developmentand environmental pollution. The three northeastern provinces in China is the oldindustrial base in the north.one of northern economically developed cities, its rapideconomic development of the increasingly faced with the reality of pollution. It is ofgreat significance and urgency for the three northeastern provinces in China to doresearch on the relationship between economic and environment’s growth. Especiallyunder the open condition, the increasing on import and export trade and FDI in the threenortheastern provinces brings more pressure on the environment. In examining therelationship between economy and the environment are usually used in theEnvironmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), this study is began to end of the20th centuryand it’s later in the domestic than in foreign developed countries, and domestic scholarsstudies related EKC curve is also not the same.Being the Important industrial areas inChina, the three northeastern provinces is studied in EKC curve, and its research articlesis not enough. So the researches used EKC curves theory in-depth study of economicgrowth and environmental changes of the three northeastern provinces in China havesome theoretical and practical significance. This article selects the cities of three northeastern provinces of China during theperiod of2001-2010panel data, through total volume of waste water discharge, volumeof industrial waste gas emission, volume of industrial solid wastes produced, volume ofSO2emission and various economic indicators establishs EKC models, discusses if thereexists inverted u-shaped EKC curve under the open economy in the three northeastprovinces from the perspective of qualitative and quantitative description. First, this paper introduces the research background and significance, as well as research methodsand content, secondly analyzes the theoretical basis of EKC and the current situation ofeconomy and the environment in the three northeastern provinces. Then conducts therelevant empirical studies, results show that there is no strict sense of the invertedu-shaped EKC curve in the three northeast provinces, trade has certain effects on theenvironment, while foreign direct investment (FDI) gets a significantly negative relationwith pollutants. Regression results do not support the pollution haven hypothesis. Finally, put forward the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions through the results andthe actual situation of the three northeastern provinces.
