Vinyl acetate-acrylate copolymer emulsion is the copolymerization emulsion of vinyl acetate andacrylate monomers. Vinyl acetate was used as hard monomer, which can avoid chlorosis ofstyrene-acrylic emulsion, and the price is far lower than the pure acrylic emulsion. But the productiontechnology of vinyl acetate-acrylate emulsion is not mature enough, such as reaction heat aggregating,reaction temperature difficultly controlled, even emulsion coagulation phenomenon. In order toovercome the shortcomings, the anionic and nonionic composite reactive emulsifier NRS-138wasused, and with the pre-emulsified and semi-continuous adding method, acrylic soap free emulsionwas copolymerized. In addition, soap-free vinyl acetate-acrylate emulsion was modified by vinylsilicone so that improve fabric hand which finished.In this paper, the emulsion polymerization was through using vinyl acetate (VAC) as hardmonomer, butyl acrylate (BA) as soft monomer, acrylic acid (AA) as functional monomer,ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator, and choosing suitable cross-linking monomer. As well,soap-free emulsion was modified by vinyl silicone. The emulsifier type and amount the amount ofinitiator, the amount of protective colloid, hard and soft monomer ratio, the amount of chaintransfer agent, the crosslinking monomer type and amount as well as the reaction temperature,reaction time were discussed and analyzed by the single factor experiment method. The bastconditons for the polymerization reaction were determined: The reaction temperature was70℃,dosage of the anionic and nonionic composite reactive emulsifier NRS-138was1.2%(on weightof total monomers, the same as below), dosage of initiator was0.6%, pre-emulsifying time was30min~60min, dropping time of pre-emulsion was210min, holding time was120min. The particlesize distribution, structure and thermal properties of soap-free vinyl acetate-acrylate emulsion andthe emulsion modified by vinyl silicone were characterized by using modern analysis instrumentssuch as nano particle size potentiometric analyzer, FT-IR and TG. The results show that the modifiedvinyl acetate-acrylate copolymer emulsion by vinyl silicone improved the thermal decompositiontemperature.The vinyl acetate-acrylate soap-free emulsion and modified vinyl acetate-acrylate emulsion wereused in pigment printing, pigment dyeing and pilling resistance, and the influencing factors of textileperformance after finishing was discussed, such as curing temperature, curing time, dosage of emulsion, dosage of adding cross-linking agent. The dry/wet rubbing fastness, soaping fastness,whiteness and K/S value of the finished textile were also tested. Determined the optimal amount ofvinyl silicone through the comparison of not modified emulsion and modified emulsion by thefabric hand. Compared of the selfmade vinyl acetate-acrylate emulsion and the similarly merchantproducts performance, the results show that the application effect of selfmade vinyl acetate-acrylateemulsion has reached the industrial application level, and the fabric hand is better than the similarlymerchant products when the vinyl silicone modified acetate acrylate emulsion was used in pigmentdyeing and pilling resistance.
